I have reinstalled windows XP Home on my laptop.

I have wireless access to the net, and initially it could 'see' my main pc which hosts the internet connection.

Internet connection is just fine, but although my main pc can see all the folders on my laptop, I cannot get the laptop to access the main pc.

The message I get is :

Mshome (the name of my home network) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

If I go to 'View Network Connections', It shows that my internet gateway is connected thru' 'Main', my main pc.

Any ideas gurus?

Sounds like you may need to enable sharing on your PC as your internet connection is working.

Right click on Drive/Partition -> properties -> sharing -> enable network sharing.

Thanks Lee, but I think that is already done. I have clicked on the 'c' drive of my main pc and enabled sharing and also allowed network users to change my files.

I am a bit stumped really.

Or that should maybe read I am a bit of a stump...

Do you have your Guest account disabled on the PC?, the guest account is required as local network permissions and access is mapped through the Guest Account.

The other thing to do is check the workgroup on the laptop matches the PC in control panel -> computer name -> change.

That all seems to be fine... but still no joy. I can send files to the laptop but not t'other way round.

BTW, thanks for your help.

I know this is a really simple permission problem but I have been drinking and can't think what is up.

Do you have a firewall running on the PC?, if you do try switching it off and then try again to access the files.

It's very simple.

You must make sure that you have a matching username and password on each machine (and you must have a password).

I don't think you do not have to be logged on as this user, but they do have to exist.
