Over the weekend, a good friend of mine sent me an email, it was sent to my company email address about a certain well known online butcher doing special offers for the summer. I literally read it, closed it and that was it. I did not discuss it within anyone or forward it and did not tap on the links within the email to take me onto their website.

Monday morning going through my Instagram feed and to my amazement, this online butcher was being advertised. I have never seen one of their adverts before on Instagram and never had any interaction with this business. Is this purely coincidence? I cannot think how they would get my details for targeted marketing by just looking at an email.. My Instagram email is not tied to work one, but my private Hotmail..

For completeness my friend is not on Instagram, however he sent it through his Hotmail account..

Was there an image in the email? Could have been one pixel. If it's an inline image served from a URL they'll know you opened an email with that image, and can get your email address.
