Mobile media etiquette or am I just a miserable old ****?
Discussion
Not sure if this is the right place but as PH is the bastion of reasonable people able to bring clarity to almost any issue I thought I'd ask for the collective's thoughts on this issue.
I find people who play media (music, games, media or whatever) at top volume on their mobile telephones extremely irritating. Even more so if it's in a public place like a train or the pub. These selfish f
ks epitomise everything that's wrong with people, worse if you ask them politely to please turn it down a little they react with aggression. Oddly enough they seem to hate it if you return the favour, I had an old Nokia that produced the loudest noise I've ever heard a phone make. When people behaved like this I'd just point the phone towards them and let rip. They'd usually get the message and stop theirs because they couldn't hear it any more.

So on to my current issue. I have house guests who I can't boot out on their arses(parents) who persist on sitting there, in a social situation, playing their own media at top volume and when asked to turn it down a bit act like I'm asking them to eat a turd. If it wasn't for my patient and reasonable nature I'd have confiscated their telephones only to be returned when they learn to use them responsibly. To make it more annoying they insist on turning on the television/radio before commencing their onanistic behaviour.
I noticed my friends allow their adult children to sit there watching love island or whatever at the dinner table.
The question is, am I an unreasonable old b
d who has failed to move with the times? (obviously I'm an unreasonable old b
d it's the failing to move with the times thing I am asking about really)
Or
Are these people all selfish
S who don't give a f
k about other people.

No, you are being very reasonable and measured in your response to this highly irritating behaviour that as afflicted large amounts of social media connected society.
Yes, I feel that they are being selfish.
I'm of the PlayStation generation. I'm not averse to the birth and growth of technology. In many ways it is beneficial to the health and cultural wealth to society.
However, people have addictive tendencies by nature and get sucked into social media. The big firms exploit this nicely. Social manners get put to one side as it is now expected behaviour to be on a connected device. This is unfortunate in my view.
I was at a lovely Derbyshire Dales restaurant on Saturday. Upon observation, everyone under 25 years old was on the 'phone despite sitting outside with great views. There was not much chatting going on; if there was then it was orientated around the' phone.
Makes me think about the thread about stress. Humans, as animals, need to rest. Being constantly wired on caffeine, alcohol and social media is not healthy.
As for the table next to us and the millennial slob paying YouTube clips loudly to his attractive partner... poor show.

In that situation pal of mine has a very loud phone and a copy of the Terry and June theme tune that gets cranked all the way up. You tell them the rules of your house.
On a train is one thing, but doing it in your face in your house means they think you are a moron. I wouldnt let someone treat me like a t
t in my house when doing them a favour.
I'm guessing some misguided emotional blackmail is forcing you to have them in your house?

My kids will use their tablets / phones when, for example, we've popped into the local for a pint, but I feel mortified if they inadvertently switch the sound on. Other families let kids sit with Peppa Pig on full blast. Height of rudeness. Well, probably not as bad as crapping in my pint but you know what I mean.
