Hello,

I've just ran 45m of cat5e from one patch panel to another and tested it:

I can only get pins 1,2,3 & 6 firing on the tester (Orange & Green). I ripped the pairs out of the panel, re-cut and re-punched them fresh. Same again. I thought FFS!! So I get another roll of of cat5e - different brand and better quality (BT Cables!). Do another run, punch it in to different ports on the patch panel. Same again! Except I do get a fire on pin 8 (brown) this time. I'm not too sure what's going on here?? Am I doing something wrong?

I'm wiring both to B standard and hoping to get Gigabit working, but I find it very strange that the tester will only pick up basically the 100mb pairs (orange and green).

Any advice? Thanks in Advance!

Post up some pix.

My guess is that you either haven't punched the cables down enough (probably this) or a faulty panel (never seen this).

Try your tester on a known good cable, incase it’s a dodgy tester.

Are you using a good IDC punchdown tool with
Built in cable trimmer? Your definitely getting the trimmer around the right way and cutting the outside of the cable ok?

Well it's the tester! It must be knackered. I'd been working 10 hours straight yesterday and that was my last job to do. It didn't occur to me to try different patch cables directly in to both ends of the tester to see what result that gave so thanks for that.

It's only a cheap one like this, had it for years.

I'll have to invest in a decent one.

Excellent. I had the same issue in the past using a cheapo continuity tester. smile

Whilst they are expensive I found the Fluke Microscanner testers to be very good:

A slightly more affordable option is the VDV series from Ideal Networks:

Slightly on topic, and hopefully not breaking any forum rules, but I have a Fluke Cable IQ and a Fluke Microscanner 2 available for sale inc all accessories full working order etc - if anyone on PH is interested drop me an email via my profile.
