My phone is due for an upgrade and I'm wondering what to get. The main priorities are a good camera and decent battery life.

It'll be supplied on contract, so I'm not sure what the budget equates to, but I'm assuming it'll be the upper end of the mid-range if that makes sense. The current one is a Huawei P10 that I've been a little underwhelmed by.

Any suggestions for ones to go for or avoid? smile

If you are contract bound, you are stuck with it for two years, so check the Android 10 compatibility. Most of them will get 1 OS upgrade in their lifespan. Then you need to decide brand new mid range, or last gen high range.

Or look at the Pixel 3a range. Good value those, and pure Android, which may or may not be a bonus.

Pixel 3 over the 3a (3a was a way of cheapening it down) but in all honesty if you can wait 4 weeks the Pixel 4/ 4 XL is due out (October 15th I think the release is).

Most people seem to prefer the 3a over the 3, the latter having many documented issues online, and is a lot more expensive too. If you want a flagship as said wait for the 4, but otherwise I'd take the 3a over the 3 due to being very nearly as good for considerably less money and with better battery life and fewer issues.

loosing IP68 on the 3a and also loosing Gorilla Glass put me off. I'm waiting for the 4 XL to replace my 2 XL.

Same, although I'm finding Android's lack of polish of late and the lack of ultrawide lens rather large drawbacks at the moment. I've been looking over towards the dark side again - but it's the price of entry that puts me off...

Have a look at the Honor 8X.

Best phone I've owned. Can be had for around £210.

My Oneplus 5t has been better than any Samsung or HTC I've had. Love the face recognition and fingerprint to unlock. Only thing I don't like is its a bit too big, so can be a bit annoying in my pocket.

I wouldn't ever consider a OnePlus 7 Pro then! hehe

Yeah, thinking I'm done with fancy smartphones after this one.

In truth I am more impressed with my Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite than I was with my Samsung S7. Android One, a good camera, two days battery life, and it cost buttons. I can't see me buying a "flagship" phone ever again.

What ever you get make sure its recent and has good OS and Security support, Pixel 2/3 and new 4 or an Android One supported device.

For your info the Pixel 2 has just got Android 10 along with the 3 so its up to date at the moment. Not sure if the Pixel 1 got it.

Cheers gents. Think I'm leaning towards a Pixel 3a.

Ah wasn't sure and didn't have time to check, surely the 1 is coming to the end of its support soon though?

I'm still not sure if I'm going to rush to buy a Pixel 4 (nothing wrong with my 2 XL) or wait till they come down a little.

You would think so wouldn’t you?

Same here, not going to pay full price for the Pixel 4 assuming that is what I go for, and I’ll be wanting to see reviews first; real people reviews rather than just the usual plethora of tech reviews! The 2XL I think could easily do me another year at a push.

The camera on the P30 Pro is pretty good if that's your thing.

Battery lasts 2 days pretty hard use.

It's a funny one. What do you really want out of it? I've got a budget Sony and don't have any issues with it as it does everything I want eg editing photos, posting on Insta, diary stuff, playing Real Racing 3, arguing with strangers on Facebook. It cost me an extra £1 a month to get this phone. I could have paid another £15-20 a month but I really don't see the extra cost being worth it. It is small but having a couple of inches extra of screen space is nicer but it will still be stupidly small compared to the 24" dual scren set up I normally use to argue with people on PH. biggrin

ive got a xiaomi pocophone f1, and came from a huawei, so much better value for money, better running, i would buy whatever phone yourself and get a sim only, as gives you more choice.
