Last few weeks some people have been digging up every street in our estate. I googled to find out what was going on and they are installing cable for Vodaphone Gigafast broadband. Not sure why they chose us as we already get FTTH and speeds of up to 300mb. But with this they will give speeds to 900mb for £48 / month.

Currently we pay £60 for 80mb. Another provider was offering 150mb for £60 a month and I was about to swap to them, but will wait.

Anyone else on this? What is the service like? In 5 years of FTTH we have had one instance of downtime and that was fixed in a couple of hours. Assume I will still have to pay BT line rental?

I can't find any details on exactly when it will become available. It all seems a bit too good to be true. 500mb is £38 / month. Almost half the price and 6 x as fast. The cynic in me sees this price increasing rapidly in the near future once you are an established user.

Vodafone pay monthly customers get an additional £5 / month off. Annoyingly we all on O2.

You're paying a lot there - IIRC I have 78 for £25pm on voda.

Yes I realised recently we were paying over the odds. When FTTH first came BT was the only option. Now there are others. Zen offer 300mb at £70/month.

Noticed on Gigafast the download and upload speeds are equal. I am going to wait for the Vodafone Gigafast. £38 for 500mb looks great.

Same topic here; pointless and limited.

Wrong area to be doing this & wrong company to be limiting it to.

Poorly thought out and just speed one-upmanship (for MK), that very few people will be able to use in conjunction with their existing suppliers; judging by wifi SSIDs every one in our area is with Sky or BT, probably getting bundle deals vodafone will not be able to match.

Ah didnt see the other thread.

Yes we had a problem when FTTH first came in. Every bugger in each direction was then on BT with a Home Hub 5. All set to the default wifi channel.

laugh

I did realise that. Its limiting and pointless, and one up man ship as you say. When BT installed FTTH they blew the fibre in. This lot have dug up most of the estate to run their own cables. The speeds are impressive but the provider lock down puts me off. At least there are options with the normal FTTH

Is there really a speed difference? I was on 40mb talktalk now on 80mb virgin and dont see any difference to be honest. Apart from I now pay 18 quid a month instead of 25.

Normal browsing you probably wouldn't but if your shifting big files or have 2 teens streaming crap off YouTube whilst I'm downloading a film the more the merrier.

Not their fibre product, but Voda's new unlimited 4G/5G tarifs are good.

I just got an unlimited max sim, £21 + VAT per month on 12 months, apparently its truly unlimited.

I have clear line of sight to a tower 3km away. In the house I get about 35Mbps on LTE but with an external directional antenna outside I get 70Mbps down and about 40Mbps up. DSL here is 18Mbps down / 1Mbps up as I'm miles from a cabinet.

I understand other operators are using the same tower so might have a go at setting up a pair of LTE modems on two networks with simple connection load-balancing from my firewall.

I've been travelling around with my son visiting universities and have been checking the speed on Vodafone at each location. At Bath uni I got 160Mbps down and 40Mbps up on 4G.

At home I get a similar speed on both our 100Mbps Virgin and Vodafone 4G. 70/40 seems about normal for Vodafone 4G, and speed wise it is a viable home broadband replacement - the only caveat there is the cost of 5G capable modems - currently not that affordable.

I should have said I'm in a very remote location so having 70/40Mbps and direct line of sight to a mast is very lucky indeed. I imagine it will be some time before 5G is available here but when it is, assuming the tower stays where it is, it'll be my only prospect of true superfast connectivity. The last time I asked for a leased line quote it had a £113k installation surcharge.
