I think I may already know the answer but I have an AMD motherboard where the Radeon 5750 graphics card has a large fan that effectively blocks the only PCIe slot on the board.

There are longer rails below but they don't look like they will take a PCIe card and the divider seems to be the wrong end of the rail.

I assume this is poor design?

Would a ribbon extension help you around the problem?

That's a good idea. It didn't occur to me, despite having an extender or two.

It seems so obvious now.

Interesting.

The gap looked too narrow so I whipped the graphics card out and suspect that it may still not fit, despite the narrowness of the ribbon connector. There is a gap within the fan's shroud but I think it may be too far in towards the fan.

Worth a go although I'd have to stick the loose end to the inner case to avail myself of one of the lower expansion slots.

At least it gave me the chance to hoover all the thick dust off the various fans so it may all last longer.

Success! Despite it looking like it would not fit in the gap, it fitted without any problem.
4 port USB port ordered.
Many thanks.
