Hi

I have a BT homehub 5 and the wifi has steadily got worse, the broadband is fine.

It's now reached the point that I now use my 4G at home.

I have separated out the wifi signals which has made a slight difference.

What I want to know is, do the homehubs wifi fail over time and should I buy some other device to replace it or???

We had a similar issue with a HH5 after a couple of years. Replaced with a HH6 and its been fine since.

They can fail and in my experience, HH's fail faster than others - I've binned 2 over the years.

I bought something called a 'Fritzbox' some years ago. Odd name but totally bulletproof.

The HH6 we put in has been rock solid by comparison to the 5 which used to have be rebooted every couple of weeks.

Used to bugger about installing my own routers etc but I just can't be arsed these days, will be moving to Vodafone Gigafast soon though and apparently the standard router is pretty terrible.

Just looking at the Google wifi 2 pack

Has very good reviews, anyone tried them?

Installed some for a relative not that long ago, work well and do the job. You should also ring BT and see if you can get them them to send you a new HH, this is what I did, was easy enough and cost me £0!

OK will try BT first, as £0 sounds appealing

They might try and have you pay the postage and packing, which was £1.99 I agreed to this but they never charged us for it

The wifi on these does fail, I'm on my third and that too has failed.

I gave up, disabled the WiFi and replaced it with a pair of Tenda MW6 mesh system. The benefit with that is you get better wifi performance upstairs (or wherever you place the second box).

The other option is to get another modem, however VDSL models are not cheap if you want decent wifi speed.

I am happy to report that the new Smart Hub 2 fixed it.

But before that I also had multiple faults with the BB side too.

The whole process has been going on for over 6 months

The Sister BB to BT, Plusnet use a similar Router to the HH5, that was awful. We moved to Talktalk who use a similar router to the HH6 which is better, what made it amazing for coverage is the BT Whole Home, mesh wifi setup.

I ran Fritzbox too for years but earlier this year turned poor and kept 'clicking' so tried my old Hub6 which has ran fine until today. . . .still on trying to sort it along with work that needs doing!!
