MS HUP is moving to a discounted monthly subscription on Office 365, not sure how that works if you change jobs and whether you lose the discount or whether there's no checks in place. But if you can get HUP now, I'd recommend paying the £20 for Office 2019 now rather than getting locked into a monthly fee in the future as inevitably it'll cost you more.
It's also worth bearing in mind that your kids will enter the world of work and could easily be disadvantaged if they know how to do clever stuff in Google Sheets, when the world largely works in Excel.

Agreed, although there's no harm in being familar with Google Sheets. I certainly wouldn't disadvantage them by lumbering them with Open Office & the like.bramston21 said:
Hello,
does anyone use any of the other systems / software packages that are viable as an alternative to MS Office..?
Get a new home PC - mainly for kids to use - and planning on not getting a MS Office pack.
What else would you recommend..?
Am aware of Google Docs.
thanks,
A
Google is the easiest these days in many ways. Especially if you have a Gmail account and/or Google drive. Docs is free and you just save to Google Drive. You don't even need to install anything.does anyone use any of the other systems / software packages that are viable as an alternative to MS Office..?

I don't use MS Office at all now for private use (only work were I have no choice).
Open/Libra Office are fine too, or if you are on a Mac you get Pages and Numbers included for free.

Although it failed to send me any email to my work address when I used the form ??It's also worth bearing in mind that your kids will enter the world of work and could easily be disadvantaged if they know how to do clever stuff in Google Sheets, when the world largely works in Excel.
With regards to leaving on the old HUP your license was no longer valid (no checks or anything). So you were meant to stop using the software if you left the company. With the new HUP the discount is valid as long as your subscription is active. Also if you are already a subscriber you are meant to be able to get the discount applied to your current subscription
Edit to add: just got the emails to work. Subscription to home dropped from £80 to £55 (yes there are cheaper options but I want multiple users)

If you know Excel you can wing it if you need to to use Sheets.

The big difference for serious usage is VBA. Lots of big business is run at least partially on VBA powered ExcelIt's pretty enough & has some good collaboration features but in reality if you walk into a job it's likely they use Excel. If you know Excel you can wing it if you need to to use Sheets.

If you are doing complex formulas and/or VB code, then Google Sheets may be more limiting, but the reality is, this isn't the anything other than a small minority of Excel users.

If you have another computer or are replacing an existing one the software can be copied across and is (probably) covered by the licencing agreement for the same house? When we recently got a new (refurbed) computer we just carried all our old files and the old Home Office and Student software across.
