My wife’s iPhone was stolen by a bloke who came into her business on Tuesday. As soon as she realised, she told me and I activated lost mode, but by that time the phone was already offline. Just had a notification pop up that it’s in some sthole in East London.

Basically have one question:

Can they actually do anything with an iPhone that’s got activation lock on and is in lost mode? As far as I’m aware it’s pretty much only any good to part out - there’s no way of setting it up with how it is now. I doubt some scumbags are smarter than the folks who work for Apple.

Please tell me they can’t use it, because I’m fighting the urge to drive over there to forcibly take it back, but that is clearly a terrible idea. At least if it’s completely useless I can be half contented.

Sadly only one mate that I very much would not want to fight, but he’s on holiday. hehe

Pretty sure they get shipped abroad where any security features don’t work.

As you mentioned .only in certain countries. But that’s why part of the security on offer can wipe the drives .Maybe the gangs can retrieve this info now ?

IMEI block only works in certain countries

Activation lock is local and global

Stolen phones are often broken for parts ... Like cars

They're now sending me phishing SMS messages from 'Apple', telling me that the phone has been found (my number is displayed on the lost screen). All I have to do is click on a link and input the Apple ID details to see its location. hehe Think I'll just use it as a handy way of sending them some abuse. thumbup

Sneaky!

I knew a kid like that once, he knew all the scams and tricks going. he could tell you how many security guards were likely to be on shift at the local shopping centre and when the shift changes were etc etc.

Yet, he got very generous benefits for having ADHD and learning difficulties..

It’s locked by the network. If it goes somewhere far away they wipe it, and sell it as a 2nd hand phone. Easy. Africa, for example it’s easy.

Just blocked here!

No, that's if it's IMEI blocked. That's only, generally, "western" countries.

If it's blocked at Apple's servers, it stays blocked.

Yup, they are phishing for the password so they can unlink it from the account.

Phone isn’t coming back!

Here are the scenarios

They will sell the phone to phone shops who will strip it for parts

If they are organised they will send a fake iCloud message to the owner and tell them to input iCloud username and password. Once they have these they can change the iCloud email account assword on the device, remove the account and now the phone belongs to them. If they are more intelligent, they'll feign a fault with the phone and get it replaced under warranty.

Or if above does not work

Organised groups will let shopkeepers collect enough phones and then come and buy them. They'll then sell them to places like Bury New Road, Manchester who will then strip them down to LCD screen, Logicboard, rear camera etc and sell parts on Ebay......

The mobile phone trade is full of scummy folk

If it's got the "fine my iphone" feature turned on it's a brick to anyone without the iCloud details, hence they are phishing for your account details. Apple themselves cannot do anything until that feature is disabled, and they block the nation state level workarounds as and when they are exposed so I doubt some stheads in a crack den will be unlocking it any time soon.

When I activated lost mode when my iPhone was stolen, I got the same phishing messages.
A few weeks later the device was switched on in China and I could even see the street and property the phone was in!

They need to invent some kind of battery dicharge feature, that cranks the power up to 10,000 amps, then when it is next touched by the scrote it discharges, frying all the internal components and making them worthless, and frying the scrote and making his carbon footprint predominately carbon.

Often it's the sim thats worth the money, into a computer to rack up premium rate calls etc.

The phone will be shipped off somewhere for little money.

Exactly, the police are simply not fit for purpose when it comes to crimes like these. Isn't the general message just to claim off your home insurance and let the scum carry on enjoying their life of crime...

My brother recently had 2 phones stolen from his house and the police were all over it.

Ok admittedly they also took 2 cars. However it was the phones that the police found when doing a search and helped to implicate the Accused.
