Not sure where to ask this, if it should be elsewhere, would mods please move it, thanks.
I recently spent a weekend in Jersey, C.I., and one evening Googled restaurants near me, to check out places for dinner.
Half a dozen were listed, so I tried to make reservations.
The area code for every phone in Jersey is 01534, and the international code is + 44, so I initially tried, (on my mobile), 01534-123456, this got “call failed”, 2 or 3 times, so I omitted the 0, and tried 1534-123456, failed again, I then went for + 44 (0)1534-123456, still no good.
I juggled a few more, Googled calling Jersey with a U.K. mobile, and got 00 44 followed by local number, still failed miserably.
Eventually I had the concierge in our hotel make the call on the hotel’s land line, and got in.
I’m no expert, but I’m a long way from being a technophobe, but can anyone tell me where I went wrong?
Please don’t say by going to Jersey in the first place confused

Sounds like you've got a call bar activated on your account.

Note that just because Jersey has what looks like a UK STD code (01534), it's not part of the UK.

What is the country code of Jersey?

Is it the same as +44 for the UK?

I thought Jersey was a bit funny to call, but putting +44 1534 xxxxxxx usually worked.

The Channel Islands are not part of the UK as far as cellular calls are concerned.

If the OP has a UK or Eurozone call package, calls to Jersey will fall outside of that.

Any such calls are also likely to be far more expensive than calls to destinations within the EU.

If you use 44 you know that you have to drop the leading 0 so 44 1534-123456?

Yes, I knew that, and I did omit it, that’s why I put the 0 in brackets, + 44 (0) 1534-123456, it didn’t help though, but I appreciate your input.
I’m unlikely to be visiting the C.I. again in the very near future, but I’ll check with my service provider for the correct way to dial successfully.

Which network are you on ?
And which network were you on whilst in Jersey ?

Also was data working ... ?

as this might give a clue as to what happened...

also did your provider sms you when you landed in jersey with tariff details ?
As at the moment it doesnt look like your network recognised that you had roamed or that you have disabled global roaming somewhere ... as others have said despite its number range .. Jersey and Guernsey are in the UK or the EU ..and your provide might not even have a roaming agreement/or you've disabled it

If network means service provider, then I’m on Giffgaff, which runs on O2 I believe.
I didn’t check if I was on something different in Jersey, so I assume Giffgaff while there, I was able to call my wife, who is on 3, she too was in Jersey, and she called me successfully too.
Data was working, I Googled French restaurants, got 2 or 3, and tried to call for a reservation.
Yes, Giffgaff sent me an sms with tariff details, I didn’t disable roaming.
There was probably a valid reason that I couldn’t make a call, but it’s all academic now.
