Situation: I'm currently using an iPhone (XR, iOS 13) for now as my Android phone is dying.

I used to use the hotspot all the time on my Android. Worked flawlessly.

I've put the same SIM into this iPhone and it picks up the network and lets me use it normally in all respects, but the hotspot simply doesn't work.

I've tried connecting 2 laptops and an Android phone to it and none of them work. One of the laptops connects but gives "No Internet" (internet is working fine on the iPhone), another laptop just says "Can't connect" and the Android phone also fails to connect.

I've tried rebooting the phone, the laptops, resetting the network settings in the phone, changing the password for the hotspot, literally nothing works.

The only theory i have left is that my SIM deal does not permit tethering, but is able to enforce this somehow on an iPhone but not on my Android phone; I vaguely remember this being the case a long time ago but it seems mental if that is still the case.

Any thoughts?

Well not confirmed for sure, but it looks like the SIM affected needs to be on an "iPhone tariff". Never heard of search a thing. Seems ridiculous tbh.

I had this problem on o2, just called them and they shunted down the correct settings to my phone/sim combo and it was fine after that, never heard of an "iPhone tarrif" before, sounds made up to me!

Maybe but its bizarre having to ring them up to use something that just works on an android device, whats the difference exactly?

Wish I had found this out before I spent 90 minutes troubleshooting the phone today frown

Could be I suppose. Weird thing was when I reset the phone settings, the option actually disappeared. I then found an option to enable it in Mobile Data settings, which told me to visit a website (o2) to activate it, and when I visited it I just got an error anyway.

To be fair I’m just borrowing the phone with a view to maybe getting one but obviously I had to determine if this was a fault of the phone, iOS13 or, as discovered, the provider. My contract is coming to an end in 10 days so now that I know its not the phone I’m not overly bothered about sorting it.

sometimes you need updated carrier settings sent to you in a service message from your provider, that can solve a lot of oddball issues.

In the olden days, you weren't allowed to tether on general tariffs, you had to be on a specific tariff.

I can't remember if it was just an iPhone thing or not.

Have you had the same simcard for a while?

Forget using hotspots, just go scan your face and make a cartoon move.
Maybe look at how preety it is in your hand, that may distract you, until you get your proper phone back lol

Yeah had the sim for 2 years. Using the iPhone because my android phone decided it doesn’t like me anymore (don’t think it ever has tbh)
