My home internet went down earlier today, Virgin.

My mobile devices show a connection to the modem but then no outward internet connection except for facebook via an app.

I can’t load google or any other of a range of sites I’ve tried. I’ve tried on a couple of mobile devices with the same result.

Ethernet connected stuff just shows no connection.

Tried the usual restarts etc and virgin were clueless and have sent a new modem.

Any ideas? Seems really strange that Facebook will connect at good speed but nothing else.

To update my own thread it seems that the Virgin DNS is st and you need to change it to Google DNS which is easy - on a PC.

I think you may still be FUBAR on other devices.

My connection speed is better than ever having switched.

Just connect to the admin account on the router itself and change to (admittedly. from memory) . . .

8.8.8.8
&
8.8.4.4

This. Change the DHCP settings on the router to give out googles DNS. I spent weeks troubleshooting a weird connectivity issue only to find it was my ISPs DNS.

Or 1.0.0.1 and 1.1.1.1 if you want "Privacy first".

Pretty sure you cannot change the Virgin Superhub DNS settings. Need to put it in modem mode and use a separate router.

Might not have been you OP. My virgin connection was down yesterday too. And it basically never goes down.

No doubt but I'm pretty sure it was a DNS issue unless there was massive coincidence of Virgin coming back just when I changed my PC DNS settings.

I wish I'd known about changing it before as the speed of page loading etc now is so much better than it ever was before.

Particularly rubbish that the Virgin tech help knew nothing about it and just said they would send me a new modem.

Three has not been good for a week or so for me but today after the network came back up it's faster than it has been for about a month. I'm on the very fringe of reception and was getting between 8 and 10 mbs but now it's up around 20 mbs, hopefully it will get better when I've got the external antenna installed when I get enough time to do it.
