Decided to hang onto my 8Plus for another year, battery health is 91 percent and it isnt holding a charge anywhere near as well, local phone place wants £45 to change the battery, Apple want £49 and a load of messing going to the store and arranging it. May as well do it rather than see it degrade further and have to do it before I get rid.

So, going to change it myself, am fairly used to electronics but interested if anyone has done one and what was it like to do, any links to a decent kit that has everything you need.

Not done it myself but took my 6S last week to a local place, charged £20.
Apple reckon it shouldn't need changing until it's at 80% which mine was. When I left work (I have to leave it in my car) it would be flat.
Be aware that Apple won't touch it afterwards if you have a 3rd party battery put in. Not something I would do if I had an 8.

They usually have a good guide.

But battery wise, I would pay them.

You sure the drop is not due to too much enabled running in the background?

Think I found the issue, lock was set to five mins, so it was keeping the screen on for five mins every time I checked something.

Think that should reduce the battery usage quite a bit !

I have found that you need to drill down through apps and check out out what they are doing and when. Using GPS, Bluetooth, location services etc. ON a 6s at the moment and it is dire on battery meaning you start to check these things out. Location services I set to "while using" for example. I am going to guess it will use a bit of power with the gps and beaming back to base if it is on "always"?

OP,

‘If’ you decide to get the battery changed, just get Apple to do it. Every time I’ve heard of someone else doing it themselves, battery life has been nowhere near the supplier’s claims. Lion batteries are dodgy enough as it is without risking a dodgy third world knock off charging overnight next to your bed!

Apple might be reluctant to do it at 91%.

I think your screen lock issue will make the difference, though.

Its on 63 percent now, was down at 25 by this point earlier in the week, not sure why I set that.

Will leave it and get it changed when it gets nearer the 80 percent threshold.

Been a bloody good device for the last two years, interested to see what they come up with in 2020.

Im not an Apple user, but third party £45 vs OEM £49 is a no brainer. Apple one will come with some kind of warranty.

I went to Apple to get them to swap a broken screen on a 6. They mumbled something (like they were too busy) and gave me a brand new (refurbed) phone.

Don't think that would happen at a 3rd party bodgers!

Yeah, its just convenience, 4 quid difference vs faffing about with appointments and traipsing to the Trafford centre or Manchester, but will get an oem one when its needed, sorting the screen lock thing has made it so its perfectly acceptable again.

I just had Apple’s online service put new batteries in an SE (80%) and X (91%)

They send out packaging that you use to return the phone. Apple’s quoted turn-round time is a week but both were replaced in 2-3 days. In both cases they sent out a new or as-new refurb phone

Good to know, will wait for it to dwindle a bit more and then get it done,

So you are saying you sent in 2 phones that you owned for fresh batteries and they sent you back refurbished phones instead of changing the batteries?

That doesn't seem too likely to me? Unless it was a deeper issue, they would just change the battery. Unless I am misunderstanding you!

apple take so long just for a battery change. but id feel way more comfortable with an official battery. its a tough one because once i waited 6 hours for a battery change. is it worth wasting a day off for your battery?

Yes both came back in as new condition with different serial numbers. Think about it, there’s a backlog of incoming phones to work on, they would have to diagnose, change battery, provide refurb case etc, test and repackage. Or they send out a refurb and add the incoming handset to the queue to be worked on

Bose just did the same with a Soundlink Mini 2 that I recently sent for a new battery, so not uncommon

I just replaced my battery, took lots of care removing the screen.

Took loads of care. Baby steps, lots of time.

Still managed to crack the screen at the very last point of lifting it off. Now I’ve got to replace the bloody screen too.

I’m pretty practical, and was being (I thought) really patient. Just not patient enough.

My advice: leave it to the experts who have done loads of them. If they break your screen, they replace it.

jacko: With a little bit of practice you get used to screen locking your phone the second you are finished with whatever you are doing. My hand hits the screen lock button as I put it back down/in my pocket.

I know lots of people don't but it becomes second nature.

I just upgraded my iPhone 8 to an 11. The Apple Store Aberdeen replaced the battery in my 8 and it did indeed cost about £49. This was done in the time it took to have lunch. However, I had just spent the thick end of £800 in their shop, so would not have been pleased with anything less than a fast service.
