I find the GPS on the phone works well to map runs and I'm not that bothered by most smartwatch functionality, so what I am looking for is something with as accurate as possible a heart rate monitor that links with the Apple Health app more cheaply than an Apple Watch. Anyon got suggestions or feedback?

You want a chest strap, no idea which one you should get though. Maybe the Wahoo.

The wahoo one does work with an iphone. I used to use it with Strava when I was running but it was a bit flakey at picking up the chest strap (Strava itself, not the phone). Apparently they are removing support for sensors in the next version of Strava though. Maybe the Wahoo app instead?

More recently I've switched to a £100 Garmin watch with a heartrate sensor built in. I'm very pleased with it, I only use it for running, I often carry my phone as well for music (if my shorts have a phone pocket).

No idea how you would interface a HRM directly to the Apple Health app, I've only messed around with it a few times, it seemed to log my Strava rides multiple times and say I had done 100s and 1000s of kms.

Hrm as in just measuring beats per minute?

Or one that does more, like the one in the Apple Watch with its “ecg” app

I saw this review last week

Withings Steel HR.

Looks like a watch, about a month per charge, notifications of the phone, samples heart rate every 10 (maybe 15?) seconds when not in an activity, continuous when in an activity, sleep tracking (not my thing, but there you go), waterproof to decent enough depth for swimming & showering.

Love mine.
