We barely use the landline now, I was paying Sky ten quid a month for a calls package, we made three calls in the past month, they rang to try and get me on a better deal but I ended up cancelling the calls package instead which I found satisfying.

The calls we still get are,

My Mum, despite telling her to use our mobiles, she still insists on ringing the house phone, which usually involves hunting down a handset whilst it rings, which sets the dog off doing his Air Raid Siren impression, then you find one, its invariably flat and then she asks why it always takes so long for us to answer the phone. Generally I am sat with my mobile next to me !

Her mum, similar but getting with it these days.

And the other reason it still gets used, scammers "Hello, I am Alex, I calling from BT Open-vreach and your internet is at risk" in a very strong Indian accent, Iike to fk about with them and just ask if it would be quicker if I just provided my passwords or how much money would you like me to transfer.

5 scam calls whilst working from home the other day, two like the above, and three automated ones telling me to renew my Amazon Prime. Strangely, none today, I did tell them in a very rude manner they may as well take me off their list.

Did have the Call Guardian but turned it off for some reason.

Do you still have one, still use it ?

Going to unplug the bloody things,

I have one and have all of the same issues, actually, don't answer it anymore as it is usually someone telling me I have been in an accident and I am owed money.

Does anyone remember how one used to answer the phone by saying one's own number? Why did we do that?

I'm with Vodafone fibre and the landline just comes with it. I only have it for my mum and dad to call me because their mobile is payg but they have free landline calls.

I'm sure that I'll never make a call with a landline ever again.

My wife's dad calls us on the landline. Otherwise, it never gets used - incoming or outgoing - and is beneath a pile of coats and gloves.

ETA: We moved house a short while ago. In the previous house the landline number redirected to my wife's mobile - to catch her dad's calls, and we didn't even have a landline handset plugged in.

We have fttp and while there is a facility for a traditional land line we don't have it ... There is no landline fee in the fttp cost either.

We haven't missed it one bit tbh and it's forced older family members to start using our mobile phones / facetime / duo / WhatsApp

We still have the line for internet, but haven't plugged a handset in for years.... until recently when my wife pointed out our eldest needed to learn how to dial 999, and maybe we should have one for emergencies.

Bloody thing hasn't stopped ringing with spam calls ever since. So, they're on silent. Never get answered. But are there for emergencies.

Except I bought a dect handset, didn't I? What happens when the power goes out? It doesn't work.

I'll need to get a plain old pluggy-inny springy-chord thingy, like it's 1990. It feels so backwards.

Dying out?

Surely dead already for personal use!

We had a landline put in 10 years ago as part of our Virgin package and even bought a phone to plug into it.

It’s never even been plugged in let alone had a call made on it

Lived in the current house 5 years and never plugged a landline phone in. my parents and grandparents are young enough to use mobiles so never had the need for a landline. At the old house it was only ever marketing calls so saw no benefit of plugging it in here

Presumably everyone who’s commented so far live in good reception area. I don’t so a landline is still essential for me and probably thousands of others.

we've still got ours, the MiL likes to ring on it and the signal is pretty good but the landline is better. We used it a lot in our previous two houses as the signal was poor on a good day, trying to have a conversation was frustating to the say the least when the signal kept dropping out.

We don't even have a normal phone anymore, the land line is purely for broadband.

Binned my landline when I switched to Virgin Fibre a couple of years ago. Don’t miss it.
The over 70s now call our mobiles instead wink

I think we had a landline phone in the last house. Can't recall ever making a call on it. Actually, we did. Just remembered it broke and we decided not to replace it.

Moved house in August, didn't even think about a landline until I saw this thread.

I'll use the payphone down the road if my mobile's not working.

Used to keep a handset plugged in "just in case", calls were always wrong numbers or the odd PPI / accident scam. I'd trained my parents to use my mobile anyway, although often these days it's Facetime anyway because the kids want to see.

Switched to Virgin on a new number a year or so ago and just didn't bother to plug a phone in.

Who even makes calls these days? Isn't it all about messaging instead?

I only have a landline to get fibre. Haven't had a handset plugged into it since I moved in 15 years ago.

It's quite handy as a 'sinkhole' for when I have to provide a phone number for something and I have no desire to give out my mobile.
