Got an email from Talk Talk today.

They used to support their legacy email addresses from the various business that they'd acquired free of charge. But all of that is now ending due to a 'business decision'. You can keep your email address, but you will now have to pay £5 a month for it.

I've been using the same Tiscali email address for probably 20 years. Migrating everything across to a new email is going to be a monumental pain in the arse, but I'm left with no choice as I'm certainly not planning to give those aholes any more of my hard earned.

Anyone else in the same position?

I have a Pipex account that I still use. No email yet, but I suspect it won’t be long.

I've had the same screaming.net email address since 1995.

It would be a nightmare if it gets binned.

It is a domain address e-mail, so I can have anything that I like before the @.

I never use the same address twice, so if I have given my address to 100 people, that is 100 different e-mail addresses and 100 different people to contact.

Only thing is, it is probably closer to 1000 than 100 banghead .

It's probably worth £5 per month to avoid the drama, but I know from experience that they don't handle these legacy email services very well. I used to be told which address the sender had used, but now all the mail comes in addressed to my domain address.

Same situation so reluctantly decided to pay the £5 a month out of convenience/laziness... after 8 hours of frustration dealing with TalkTalk/tiscali trying to access "my account" was told unequivocally that the £5 a month deal does NOT give you access to "my account" ( you need this for any changes or new email addresses etc ) and you CANNOT keep old tiscali email addresses just setup a new email address... be warned!
BTW I was quite cross at the time!

BTW I was grateful for free use of email address for several years - however...

Mine is still working and I've had no e-mails from TalkTalk about it.

I've got another e-mail account that is based on my own website domain. I've been using that for any new addressees for about 18 months.

I don't know how many clients they have who are only with them because of legacy email addresses. If I lose my screaming address I will be looking at different broadband suppliers. I have paid over the odds for about 20 years just so I could keep the address.

Oh well, it's been quite a ride. It's been fun trying to explain to the call centres how I have an infinite number of email addresses smile .

Had my tiscali address for 14 years and I'll reluctantly pay the £5 a month for a while. Its a minor pain notifying my contacts to use my Gmail address, but the main hassle is all the places I use the address for a login, eg Netflix, PayPal, ebay, amazon, all the on demand TV players, loads of online store accounts etc etc.

I'll change as many over as I can think of and monitor emails to my tiscali address for all the ones I forgot about, until they all get covered. Hopefully can then dump it for good after 6 months or so

Funny thing is that I use my screaming.net address for my TalkTalk login. How will they contact me if they switch it off?

This.

I don't think many people give a thought to maintaining servers, upgrades, backing up and restoring mailboxes during upgrades etc.

It's not cheap to maintain, especially these days when security needs to be top notch.

Not forgetting the running costs of said servers (power, network etc.).

But they weren't free ... They happily scanned all the emails and then made targeted adverts, sold details as going concerns, etc...

The user is the product, not the email account.

Wow, it's like I'm back in the 90s. I can hear the distant screech of the modem.
I cant understand why you would want to "never use the same email address twice". Just because you can create unlimited email addresses, doesn't mean you should lol

If you get spam from someone, do you know who gave them your address - I do wink

It's amazing how many companies that tell you that they don't sell your details or that their data is secure are the sources of spam.

you can do this with gmail, just use a + and the plus along with everything after it is ignored
eg
john.smith+ph@gmail.com will get delivered to john.smith@gmail.com

If you were wanting to guarantee keeping an email address for long term then why not get your own domain name instead of relying on a freebie from an ISP that is long since defunct?

Who me ?

I've had a TOTALSERVE e mail address for more than 20 years. The company changed over the years to Madasafish, and recently to Plusnet. But I can still log on, via my plusnet account. One Plusnet tech bloke didn't even know the history of the account/sites.

Gmail ignores full stops too so johnsmith, John.smith and j.o.h.n.s.m.i.t.h all go to the same place.

I have stayed with TalkTalk forever BECAUSE I wanted to keep my tiscali e-mail.

If they're going to bin the tiscali address, I'm going to bin TalkTalk.
