Finally i was forced to get a new fangled pc with windows 10. Got it mostly set up and customised to my tastes but there are a few issues my OCD doesnt like and i am struggling with.
I am using chrome as my default browser which is mostly working fine except when opening the browser direct from say the start menu or help topics , when i do this then chrome does open but is using Bing to search for the query . Is there any way to stop this ? I hate Bing and have google set as my home page in chrome ...

Thanks.

You've got Chrome pinned to the start menu, but when you open it it goes to some Bing search page and not your homepage? Are you sure it's Chrome and not a shortcut to something else that you have pinned?

Do you have Chrome on your desktop or taskbar? Try right-clicking that and pinning to start, and remove the old Chrome icon from start, see what that does.

Lastly, once we've ruled out obvious user issues, try disabling HelpPane.exe. I just tested option 3 here and it worked fine - F1 in Windows (desktop, explorer, etc.) no longer opens Edge with the Bing search page. I had to take ownership of the file first, and then grant full control. I don't know if option 1 and 2 work. https://www.askvg.com/fix-how-to-get-help-in-windo...

Isn't that a Chrome setting? Go here and make sure it is set to Google (or your chosen search engine)

Sorry didnt make it too clear....If i open chrome which is pinned to taskbar then it opens with google page, which is set as both my home page and also the ONLY search engine as per chrome settings.

The Bing issue only occurs when opening web suggestions when typed in to the start/search box on bottom left of screen in windows 10...

I'm not much of a Windows user these days but I think that might be a Cortana thing. Maybe try the 'Chrometana' extension for Chrome which will redirect Bing searches to where you want?

That is because it is opening Internet Explorer when you do that. It's a Microsoft search window so it will use Microsoft tools. Don't use it for web searches if you want to use Chrome open Chrome.

Or just remove the search box.

Select Search + Hidden to remove.

In the search box, type "set cortana search engine to google" and hit return.

It led me to
https://windows101tricks.com/set-google-default-se...
which says to get a chrome extension called "bing2google chrome"

Have you uninstalled Edge from your PC?

The taskbar search is a Bing search so it will use Bing, it expects to use Edge as default but if Edge isn't there it will use whatever browser you have installed, in this case Chrome.

Slightly OT, but I don’t understand why so many people still use Chrome.

It’s almost as bloated and as crap as IE was when Chrome was launched these days.

Edge works perfectly well in Win 10 and is generally faster too.

I'm not sure the benchmarks bear that out. Also, you know Edge is switching to Chromium under the hood, right?

Indeed it is, but due to it being prefetched, it’s built-in after all, it typically runs faster than Chrome.

Just from experience I’ve seen many more problems with Chrome than Edge.

Just dont use Windows' search bar, it will always try to push you to Bing.
Search direct from Chrome/Google.
Plus, I'd hardly call Chrome bloated.
