Mobile for a 10 year old
Discussion
It's likely to be used for games and not much else, I suspect. I have ruled out Apple on grounds of cost and the fact that we are an android house.
Most of the budget phones have budget processors and GPUs with all that goes with that. I have narrowed the choice to:-
Mi 8 (£230), Poco F1 (same ish price) i.e. last year's flag ship killer's from China with Snapdragon 845 and Adreno 630 GPU
or
Redmi Note 8 Pro, Realme X2 (£200 ish) - more modern design, cooler "backs" (apparently) but Snapdragon 730G Adreno 618 GPU
The benchmarks on GSM Arena suggest that the 845 is still the more capable chip for games by some margin. However, I have zero practical experience of whether it really makes a difference. I can't face being told that the phone is "too slow" in 12 months time with a request for an updated model from Santa.
So a thoroughly PH, first world problem....

I'd say a second hand iphone myself.
The android play store is a rampant cesspit of s
t and dodgy apps. A child will be complaining sooner that their phone is slow after they have installed a bazillions games and apps on it, which sometimes coerce the user into installing something else first.
At least if you have an iphone yourself, you can use the family functionality to add restrictions and app install approvals.

Realme X2 Pro has the 855 processor if you can stretch to that, not sure what the Android OS and Android Security updates are like though from Realme. Most of the budget phones have budget processors and GPUs with all that goes with that. I have narrowed the choice to:-

Might be better off with a Pixel 2/2XL or 3/3XL 2nd hand simply for OS Support and Security Support.

The boy already has an android tablet (I know, I know...) and in fairness, no real issues. The idea of controlling a tech savvy 10 year old is pretty ambitious!!The android play store is a rampant cesspit of s

I have had a look at the K20 Pro which I think is also an 855. They are around £300 on ebay at present as a grey import. If they come down a bit on black friday I could be persuaded. I would rather have a second hand pixel as well but I suspect that would be a bridge too far for a Xmas present. I also use Family Link and it's been great for setting time limits and bedtime schedules etc as well as allowing you to approve apps before install.
Personally when I upgraded my phone, I gave my daughter my old Samsung S6 with a cheap contract sim - doesn't have great battery anymore but it's sufficient for her needs.
