Are they actually worth it?
Looking at the Kindle Fire 7 it seems the tablet can be had for about £50 or the kids edition, with a rubber case and a couple of apps is £100. Kindle stuff also seem a bit restrictive.
So I was instead looking at ordinary Android tablets and rubber cases, which seems a lot better value.
It's for a 18 month old so really just cartoons and songs for now but would be nice if it was something that would be useful for a few years.

I always thought the attraction to the kids tablets from Amazon was the fact they would replace it for free if it gets damaged?
This 100%, you also get 12 months access to amazon kids stuff too. We got our now nearly 5 year old an Amazon kids tablet a year ago and it's great not having to panic each time it's dropped. I was flipping between the kids one and "normal" one but the guarantee won it for me on the kids one. No matter how it gets broken, they will replace it.We had 2 kids ones for a while. Both replaced a few times over the 2 years. Just re charged one after my eldest 2 moved onto proper tablets 12 months ago, i'd forgot how clunky the OS can be. Saying that I now have my eldest 2 fighting over it to play the games!!
Worth it for 5 and under as you can not worry about them damaging it or watching killer clown stuff which my son stumbled onto with his normal one.
Last Christmas my eldest 2 got tablets (5 &6) daughters broke about July time and my sons in so cracked he can hardly see the screen so defo worth getting the kids one with that in mind.
