Dear Microsoft,

No, I do NOT want to create a secret PIN number to use every time my laptop wakes up if I'm away from my desk for more than 15 minutes. No matter how many times you insist on asking me, the answer will always be no. Likewise I do NOT want to swipe you a copy of my fingerprint, again no matter how many times you ask me, the answer will always be the same.

I just want you to let me wake my laptop up when I enter my password. Once. Not three times, just once. Even if there is no internet connection detected, because there won't be if my laptop is sleeping, will there? I appreciate that it is difficult for you to monitor what I'm doing if I'm not online, but I don't really give a toss about that. I can quite happily get on with 98% of my routine work without an internet connection.

So please just F...... R...... O.......

Yours,

Mr. Very-Frustrated from Purley

They are just trying to protect you from yourself, and assuming that you are like 99% of the population, and a danger to yourself and others when it comes to cybersecurity. The PIN or fingerprint don't need an internet connection, given they are creating a cryptographic key, secured by your TPM chip, on that device, and that device only.

They are actively trying to push you away from passwords, because they are inherently not a human sensible way of dealing with the world, and there are major issues with password leakage.
