My wife's laptop feels a lot slower than when she bought it - is there a one-stop cleanup utility that would get rid of any unnecessary software/processes/bootup tasks etc?

If not, what separate utilities should I try?

If it helps, it's about four years old, originally Windows 7 (?) but then upgraded to Windows 10.

Type Reset this PC into the Windows search box. It gives you the option to keep or delete personal files. It will delete all installed apps however.

A reinstall of Win10 on to a reformatted drive would yield the best results.

Has it got an SSD? For the sake of £30 or so i'd stick an SSD in and a fresh install of Win10.

Before you get into the re-installing stage a couple of things to check. Most Anti-Virus tools are massively intrusive in terms of performance. They consume resource like its' going out of fashion. Personally, I removed all of the delivered AV tools and just run Windows Defender and only use a basic user account for everyday use.

Secondly, check the Startup tab in Task Manager to see what is being launched at Startup. Lots of TSR's the start are unnecessary, you can toggle them on and off then restart to see what effect they have. Most laptops out of the box have a pile of unnecessary stuff running that you can remove.

Thanks, will have a look at all of this, want to avoid a reinstall if possible but may end up trying it. Startup does seem to be where all the sluggishness happens.

Alternatively you can use the media creation tool to create an ISO on the desktop. Running that ISO file will allow you to run a full reset/repair of the pc without losing files or apps.

I'll recommend the free version of cleaner (again). Gets rid of unwanted files plus will clean the registry.

you can stop startup items easier in win10 you used to have to run msconfig but now just crtl alt delete and use task manager click more details and the startup tab and disable to your hearts content.

You can also setup the virtual memory correctly rather than auto but that's alot of info so go here https://www.geeksinphoenix.com/blog/post/2016/05/1...
