I was thinking of getting a G29, but not sure how good they really are?

I think the last steering wheel I tried was the official Xbox 360 one and I ended up not using it too much and was faster with the game pad, is it likely to be the same with one of these?

There are videos of Forza Horizon 4 using one which looks pretty good, e.g.:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtYkboNKThQ

Is there any better ones for similar money?

I got the G27 + shifter in the black Friday deals on Amazon. Have had it set up since last Wednesday and love it. I have i plugged into my PC at the mo as I have an ultrawide monitor which works well with Project Cars 2.

The biggest "issue" with having a wheel setup if where to put it. I have the space to leave mine setup all the time fixed onto my desk. It would be a PITA having to set it up every time one would want to play.

My setup for reference:

The G range (25, 27, 29 and 920) are all decent enough for the price. The tech is fairly old now, but proven and bullet proof. There are also plenty of mods out there to improve them further.

I've just upgraded to a T300rs GT, but have kept my heavily moddified G27 just incase something goes wrong with it.

I have the G920, it's pretty good, the wheel stays tucked under the desk when not in use, it's easy enough to attach and detach as required.

You will most likely be slower with a wheel to begin with, it's just the way things are, once you have been using it for a while you will be quicker and wonder how you ever coped with a pad.

Nice, that's a decent setup you have. I had an Oculus Rift for a while and used this for Project Cars, but ended up selling it from a lack of use, will likely get another sometime when next gen ones come out as it was decent. I'd imagine with steering wheel and VR it would be awesome!

I seen the black Friday deals and now wish I had just bought one as it was a decent discount. Might wait for next drop in price again.

I was thinking of getting one of the folding stands to set it up on so I can fold it away when not using, the desk I have could probably get away with setting it up like yours if I rearranged it so might try that first.

VR and a wheel is great!

Which one is better and why?

I've seen someone on youtube with a drift style handbrake and better looking gear shifter on the G29 which looked decent, how have you modded yours?

It's a great wheel with many buttons to assign to certain games and for the price, you can't beat it. I've had mine for three years but did have a slight problem with the throttle over the past couple of weeks. In game, it was showing the throttle was spiking even though I was burying my foot down.I cleaned it thoroughly so no more issues.

Only recently (last week in fact), I did a couple of mods to the pedals to improve the feel such as:

1. I found the clutch and brake plates were too close to one another so just using allen keys, I moved the clutch plate over as far left as possible and both the brake and throttle plates as far over to the right as you can.

2. Swapped the throttle and clutch springs as the throttle was way too light. Now the beefier clutch spring makes it more progressive and inspires confidence. Ok so the clutch is lighter but you don't use it nowhere near as much as the others and is barely noticable. Saying that, I am currently waiting for a stiffer brake spring to arrive so once fitted, I'll put the old spring into the clutch just so I know I've got good feeling pedals all round.

3. I took the rubber spacer out of the brake pedal as it's just not needed and I found it can hinder the braking considerably. Again, as above it is now very progressive and I can brake later with hardly any fuss.

I hope this helps but as I've said earlier, I've had no issues and it's great for the money.

Just to add, I removed the brake block and like you say it gives a more progressive pedal. I have the GTEye springs fitted to the pedals now and they are worth having but I still think the brake spring is too soft.

Brake block, I used the word spacer instead smile

I ordered the brake spring from GTeye which I'll get close to the new year. Was hoping sooner than that. I think I'll have to get used to the new spring as have used the standard set up since purchasing the wheel.

Now, I need to get a better gear knob which shows 6 speeds.

That brake block is a right royal pain the fking ing bloody pissing backside. (I'm not a fan of the brake block)

How simple is to to remove without really fking up the job. Given the mechanical skills of an angry Barbary ape?

It's a pretty straight forward job takes about 20 minutes to remove, while you are there you might as well replace the springs for the GTEye ones, even if you just swap the brake spring.

The G29/G920 are the best as they are the newest, with some small and better changes over the G25/27. The only difference between the G29 and G920 is one is designed to work with playstation, and the other with Xbox.

The best mod I did was to insert a small rubber tube into the spring of the brake peddal:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_t...

Made the brake more progressive when using it, so better for muscle memory when braking. I think the G29/920 already has a better better spring installed than the G27/29, so you may not need one. However there is this:

Also if anybody knows how I can stop qualifying 1st but hitting walls during races (iRacing), I'd love to know. (Never has one man "destroyed" so many MX5s.)

That "tube" looks suspiciously like it would cause the same issues you get with the brake block to me, happy to be wrong, how well does it compress and how is the progression on the pedal?

It is very simple but just be careful of the wiring. Plenty of YouTube vids on it.

Funny as the G25 didn't have the brake block and when upgrading to the G29, I preferred it as it felt more like a car where the brake didn't hit the floor. Now I hate it with a passion and it's a hindrance.

Sorry i meant which is better between the G29 and the T300RS? I expect the T300 but is it a big difference? The price difference is quite a lot!

Thanks for the links anyway, will have a look.

The T300 is belt driven, not cog, so it has better low level feedback. The cogs cannot move in small amounts as well as a belt driven. Its mainly about 5 year old tech versus 10+ for the G range.

The big advantage is the various replacement wheels that can fit the base, and there is then also the option to upgrade the base (to a TX or similar) and retain the wheels.

Ok thanks, I think I would just go with the cheaper G29 for now, still unsure if I would use it enough or not...
