Hi

I bought a samsung q85r and the one connect box has satellite connections (those awful screw in things that twist the cables if you're not careful smile ). I connected it all up alongside an aerial and noticed I'm only getting free view channels. Unplugged the aerial to leave only the satellite connections and TV is saying no signal. I know the sat connections work because my humax 1100s can find the channels.

I did read something about samsung TV not having a freesat license but I thought that was for the channel data and would still get video.

What am I doing wrong here? Are the sat connectors just for show?

If the freesat won't work, are free view and free sat pretty much the same anyway?

Thanks
Mike

Ok... so I went through the retune / channel discovery process and at that point the TV asks if it's freesat OR free view. I went freesat and it's found the channels but I guess this all means I can't use the aerial and the sat at the same time? Would I even need to..

Slight variations between freesat and freeview mostly the same.

Channel 4 HD has gone from freesat but is available in SD, it is available on freeview in HD
If you dont have the freesat epg skin you may have to sort all the channels into order as the tv will store them by frequency and not in any kind of user friendly order.

ETA you may find that you have freeview play on the tv, so you can play recent programmes via catch up services from the epg,

Ok thanks

Bit wierd (crap?) That I can't take c4 HD from freeview to augment the freesat list considering both sources are present..?

4hd is still on freesat and transmitted, you need to add it manual.

How do you do that?
I've got a Humax Freesat recorder in my workshop, and it would be nice to get C4HD on it for watching F1 next season.

Another daft TV question from me that I hope someone can help with. My q85r TV built in iplayer keeps forgetting I've already signed in. Latest version of app, TV software all up to date.... very annoying

Definitely a fault with mine. I have to listen to that gormless chap saying "you now need to sign into iplayer..".

Have asked richer sounds to advise iplayer was a key part of buying this TV so if it won't run it I'm returning it.

You need a TV licence to watch iPlayer content as far as I know.

You also need a BBC account to sign in with (you need to set this up using a computer / phone).

Edit: This confirms the requirement for a TV licence. https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/faqs/FAQ291

Samsung has got all sorts of problems with iPlayer at the moment, as it failed to update licenses as is now running around in a flap desperately updating its apps.
You may need to do a system update to get iPlayer working properly again

This is a 2019 TV with fully up to date firmware and a fully up to date iplayer! Crazy they can't even get that right.

Yes you are right but that's got nothing to do with samsung and their inability to run iplayer properly.

This is the gist of the story https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-50747526

But it seems more complicated than that makes out. My TV had to be updated, unplugged from the mains, replugged in, started up, updated again and then it worked... for a day. Then it had to have another update, which meant asking it to do an auto check three times before it would find the new software and install it.
Considering the size and scale of Samsung operations, it is rubbish. They had ages to prepare and just have done a terrible job.
If this Samsung fails, I'm not getting another one.

I may just return this one and get something else. I'm not paying £1600 for a TV that can't do something that my 4yr old phone can do.

Recently got an amazingly cheap LG. iPlayer (and all the other apps) work fine. Maybe take a look at an LG?

Looking at richer terms and conditions I can return in 14 days of delivery. I may exercise that right and just get a cheaper tv. Pain in the ass at this time of year though.
