For a start just delete the icons and toolbars you dont want and add the ones you do want. This has always been the same with any version of Windows.
Then just open settings and go down each section and uncheck things you dont want.
Cortana can be turned of.
Forget about the Russians because you are a grown up and make sure at the very least you have Malwarebytes installed.
Then open task manager and the Startup tab and remove any system tray stuff you know you dont need. Only remove things you know what they are. Dont get drawn into this crap that you must have nothing running in the background incase you lose 1 nanoseceond of computing power.
If your laptop is suffering because OneDrive is in the background then you have a st laptop full stop. This was the case 20 years ago before computers fully developed, but not now.
Make sure ALL your updates are done and drivers updated. If you are gaming you will need all sorts of C++,directX updates the first games you install. Once you have a modern game working, DONT TOUCH ANYTHING. On subsequent installs do not let the game ever update DirectX again as it will upset stuff.
At the endof the day, if you paid £1000+ for your laptop, you do not need to worry about the tiny little power tips you will no doubt read on all the gaming sites. These people thrive on willy waving, dont get drawn into it.
Oh and installing some kind of pretty interface to make it look like a mac will ruin it too, so dont bother.

Sounds harsh but would you rather I talk to you like a five year old?

Really? That happens to you a lot? Do you have dodgy hardware, or are stressing things massively? I have a creaky old desktop that should have been put down years ago, and I have a huge amount less BSoDs than ever before.

My wife's. I get to mop up. She's her 5th PC. Every time I get called in to clear the mess that it Windoze. Utterly hopeless software.

I used it from early 1986 onwards to about 2011 for my job, so I really do get how bad it is.

I’ve seen it once, and it was a Hard driver that caused the fault, and we support a lot of sites running it.

Clean reinstall, use Defender as an AV, and don't give her admin rights. Even my mother can't fk that up, and she managed to get Nest not to notify a doorbell push.

2011? So that's nearly nine years ago. I can't remember the last time I had a Windows crash.

The only issues I’ve had with Windows were due to Chrome eating memory Which is hardly a Microsoft issue.

I work in technology and have recently seen a shift in developers to Windows from Mac. Most are saying they can’t justify the prices anymore for what they use the PC for.

Now here I agree. Mac is silly money compared to PC.

(For my work, and tax deductible, Mac makes more sense for me, though I get PC will work better for others. (See music software).

Exactly. I couldn't justify £3k for a MBP when I've matched it for a third.
To me having a trackpad that works like a dream and a 16:10 screen is worth the premium.

The only Windows laptop I could consider is the new 15inch Surface but they use AMD chips and I don't think AMD is on the same level as Intel within the low voltage mobile CPU genre (although they now kick Intel's ass on the high performance desktop side of things)

Also scaling on Windows is proper st, and I say this as someone who uses W10 and Office for work.

The guy actually posted to ask advice, and instantly we get sarcy replies like "it'll crash a lot".

It's what happens for some odd reason.

The OP was massively negative mind you.

I'll chuck in some advice on Win 10.

1 - it's MS's best OS by a country mile, and no, it should not crash. Mine never has. I'm a heavy user.
2 - Built in AV and anti malware works well. Add Malwarebytes passive (free and only runs when you demand it to) as a precaution if you are prone to clicking on unsolicited links.
3 - Don't "skin" it. Unless you are 10. Just put a wallpaper up you like.
4 - Actually, I'm not sure I have a 4. Just use it. It's an OS. Enjoy the programs / games.

My advice is install ClassicShell and get it back to being a nice simple menu, taskbar and a desktop with none of the flashy stuff that nobody needs.

Win10 is actually very good, as others have said also I have never had it crash on any of the PCs or laptops I use. I just don't like the way it looks by default, I much prefer the simplicity of the Win7 look where it just works neatly and with no fluff, hence ClassicShell.

That was my point "4" !!! Classic Shell all the way. The new windows look seems to only satisfy the need for change.

Microsoft Volume Licensing - it works but it's a bit of grey area.
