Trying to find out why I cannot update my copy of XP...

Go to the Windoze update page, choose the updates & then the box comes up. That's it. Nothing more. No activity...

The autoupdate facility doesn't appear to be working either.

Help! (please!!!)

Many thanks

Chris

Check the time of your PC is correct. And yes, I'm serious.

Clock is OK - showing the correct UK time.

The problem seems to be more with the IE window & installer window just "hanging".

I have checked & it appears that the last update was before Christmas....

Doesn't appear to...

No problem with active X blocking or anything, the update box pops up, then remains blank & IE freezes...

Thanks, Chris

Are you accessing through a proxy? I know some proxies need bypassing for www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com or they get stuck in a loop.

No proxy just using Tiscali broadband...

I go to the windows update page, choose the updates (or let it choose it makes no difference!), a pop up appears to show progress and what updates are installing. That's where the hole thing stops. That IE window will stop responding, and you can leave it ass long as you want (I have left it overnight) and still nothing happens...

I'm stumped. My very limited IT knowledge ran out months ago..

Whilst I can't profess to understand the contents you might take a look at:

C:WINDOWSWindowsUpdate.log

Open it with Notepad - there will be lots of frightening looking lines of "code"

Page down, or CTRL-END to the bottom and post the last few lines dated when you last tried the update. If anything that might have an english like error message that someone can help with?

Maybe?

Can't find anything that is even close to update.log in the Windows file...

The joy...

Ah formatting issues after I posted (or I didn't check properly) - try one of the following:

C:'backslash'WINDOWS'backslash'WindowsUpdate.log

Or C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log

Or type C:/WINDOWS/WindowsUpdate.log into the "Run" box from the Start menu.

OK - I can't see anything relating to an error so maybe if you can edit your post and include a bit more of the log file. In the past when I've had issues with windows update there's been an error type message logged and it did take a while to get to it.

Actually, I'm hoping someone might understand more about the winupdate process and might be able to help more.

There must be an easier way?!

If you dont already have SP2, then download that and install first.

If you do, then try clearing out IE's history, and apps cache. Might work...

Error 80200010 indicates a missing update:

"An update package that includes BITS 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 is available for Windows Server 2003, for Windows XP, and for Windows 2000"

So you need to go here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;842773

and read it and then do what it says.

Unusual that Windows Update didn't tell you that it didn't have this update...

I hope that's it. Let us know how you get on.

Grrr! - It lets me download that update, then tells me that the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying. "There is no need to install this update"

I haven't got enough hair to keep pulling it out - how you IT bods do this all day - saints the lot of you

Your original post said something about hanging (the PC not you... )

Read the contents of this page and follow what it says and try again.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;292547

I also recall some other pistonheader suggested deleting temp files and history but the ms link above gets you to check and delete some other stuff.

Maybe? Just maybe?

Oh and this may sound stupid but shut down the machine and remove power for 10 seconds and the power up and then start the machine. Do it before or after the updates even if Windows says to just restart. Actually shut it down and remove power.

If this all fails send your PC to a Feng Shui consultant

I assume that no PHer would ever consider using anything other than a fully legitimate, activated copy of Windows XP...

That's what's frustrating - this is a fully paid proper copy of XP.

Grrrrrrr
