My mother has an ageing freeview recorder. She wants to replace it with another freeview box but im trying to steer her towards a firestick so she can use it for coronation street etc. Do people still record things or is it all streaming now?

Sky box records stuff every day. Stuff one can't stream.

If you want to replace the recorder, there are lots of eBay like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Freeview-HD-Recorder-Bo... that are cheap.

I still record a lot, the apps for the commercial stations are a mess and laden with ads. Personal take on it.

Recording the ones I want, ff through the ads. BT TV box but it is a Humax summit or another combined with Youview, I assume there is a non BT version.

Yes but mainly out of habit.

Also because it takes months for us to get round to watching anything. hehe

I still record a lot of programmes so I can skip the adverts. While you can get a Freeview recoder which can pick up streaming services those I have tried have poor user interfaces so don't push your mother down a route which she will find difficult to use. If she's happy with Freeview, let her have it & you can always add a Firestick or similar to educate her about streaming gradually.

I cancelled my sky contract again and sky plus is probably the biggest thing I miss. The ability to record, live pause and rewind/fast forward is a great option. I think my LG TV has the ability to do it if I plug a hard drive in but IMO Sky nailed it with the functionality and usability of even the most basic sky plus boxes and EPG.

My Virgin Tivo is always recording stuff - particularly films which often aren't available on catch up / on demand services etc. It also picks up historic stuff from on demand so that everything's in one place if you missed a few episodes.

Dont all tvs have freeview installed now? And take a hard drive to record too? My 8 year old panasonic does anyway so it's an option so not have extra boxes under the tv.

Some won't let you change channel, separate box is handy to watch one and record another at the same time. Even better if you can get a twin tuner model.
