Can anyone recommend a clean/lite piece of freeware that will record the display/screen and continues to record after reboot?

Stick an entry in startup to launch it again.

Or install a silent keylogger, tons of them about.

Or have a full and frank conversation with whoever you want to spy on. I suspect even if it's your own PC you would fall foul of some legislation if you were spying on other users. eek

I just wanted to record the steps taken by a software support company when they remote in, as they have some random settings and rather than call them when things go wrong in the future, I wanted to record the session as they will probably reboot.
They like to charge us £150 each time for the privilege!

OBS and set up a key macro to start recording which could be any key that they're likely to press?

Cobra Kid called it.

Video it and then type up the instructions.

Just make sure you're aware of what each step does and what could go wrong if you get it wrong.

If this were me I would give them a virtual PC and use a screen recorder on the host machine so it captures across the reboot.

Oracle Virtualbox is one of the easiest virtualisation technologies to set up (any modern PC will do, just needs decent memory) and even includes the ability to screen record a virtual PC, built in.

But you would need to know about virtualisation I guess.

That seems a bit underhand at the least.
I presume you are a business, so if someone did the same to you to avoid your fees?

If you suspect malpractice maybe or them setting stuff to fail ok.
Is it a problem with the software they need to address long term?
Renegotiate your support terms?

I guess it depends - if it is down to their software losing settings and its the same every time, etc - poor coding / bug then I'd say it was ok.

If it is more complex about reconfiguring based on client need then it's less ok.

It’s a case of windows settings being lost, often after windows updates, which then need to be put back into a Windows for an obscure web based software that runs on flash, java, only works on Internet Explorer 11 and has another obscure printing module. The whole thing is crap but essential and my conscience is clear really. Setting random permissions or IP addresses is not proprietary and I don’t think it’s necessary to pay them to do this when settings are lost for no reason. It’s also quicker to do it in house where we can.

Apologies to people who think this is underhand.

I'd be recording with a clear conscience having paid for one support call.
