Porting an EE number to a new EE contact
Discussion
My contract with EE is now overdue for renewal, but their upgrade options are absolutely abysmal.
New contact deals are considerably better, particularly from mobiles.co.uk
So, as I understand it, I can't port from within EE, which means I'm going to have to do contract - PAYG - PAC - contract hoop jump.
Who else has done this? Any pitfalls?

I’d ring them up and tell them you are leaving citing their renewal deals are poor. Chances are they will then be able to magically pull something out the hat.
100% This. I was at the end of a contract and rang them to see if they could match a deal I had seen with another company, yes no problem.Mr-B said:

They have got close to the best deals every renewal previously but at renewal two weeks ago they couldn’t get within £200 per contract (x2) in comparison with what Mobiles.co.uk were offering ...with EE.
OP, you need.PAC from EE, port it to your temp sim provider, then when the original number is ported to the temp sim provider get a PAC code from them to port the number back to EE.
Just don’t use Lycamobile,as the temp SIM provider they have been utterly hopeless, in fact shameful from a customer service point.

They must have changed their policy then. I had been with Orange (taken over by EE) from 1992, a coupe of years ago they were happy to match I think it was a SIM only plusnet deal at the time. Might still be worth ringing them to find out if they have changed their policy on price matching, nothing to lose.Been with EE since day dot. How long did it take you to get a PAC from the PAYG provider?
It should normally be 2/3 working days.Do not use Lycamobile though.
I've never had any of the networks offer a price match when I've given them the best deal on the internet to look at. It's always, sorry we can't compete with that. Which is odd as they are able to sell their service to those suppliers for a low enough price that they are offered and they must be able to secure better volume discounts on the handsets.
Anyway, since the new switch services came in this is trivial, just send the text tot he right number and you'll have a PAC in minutes, use it and the number is moved in a day or two. Then repeat.

I had this with EE just in December. Much better deals elsewhere compared to what they would do for me, so I was prepared to leave after being a customer for many years.
Was all set to move so requested my PAC code by text message and within 30 minutes they rang me offering much better deals - better than anything I could get on a new contract elsewhere.
Got an iphone 11 256gb, unlimited everything no up front cost for £45 month , 24 month contact

Well, as a last ditch attempt, I emailed the guy I’ve been dealing with at EE, and attached a screenshot of a deal that I saw with 3. Asked if he could get close to that, and to my surprise, he did pull something out the bag. Pretty chuffed tbh.
So happy I didn’t have to go through the whole PAYG-PAC faff. Funny though, the deals I’ve been offered previously have been rubbish – even when I’ve pointed to other deals and asked what they could do. Definitely a bit of a lottery, imo.
I think the magic trick this time was that I referred to a deal by a direct competitor, whereas previously, I’ve referred to EE deals by third parties.
Anyway, thanks to everyone who has responded, I appreciate it

Unless your handset is knackered, have you considered staying with EE and switching to SIM only contract?
I did this last week. My current handset is still fine and they didn't have the new phone that I wanted (pixel 3) so they moved me to SIM only. 3 times more monthly data allowance, same unlimited calls/texts but for less than half of what I was paying before. Then when the Pixel 4a comes out later in the year, I can upgrade to that and just change the SIM only contract to phone + SIM (for extra cost obviously).

For reference the deal EE couldn't get close to was for two Iphone XR's 64GB at £31 inc vat per month, £25 down,24 month contract,30 gb data,£75 cashback also included making £694 over two years. Deal was from Mobiles.co.uk on an EE contract.
EE's best deal worked out nearly£500 per phone dearer over the contract at £41+ vat no upfront cost.
