I just don't know the name of the things I want so can't search for them smile

The CCTV box I have has a weird RS485 socket that isn't standard (having just bought a connector) so I need to connect the bare wires I have to the black and red things in the photo below. I don't know what they are called to just buy them. Any help appreciated.

Photo below from a random internet site that shows the connector:

If you mean the black and red things in your photo, they look like standard bootlace ferrules to me. There's no 'mating' half since they aren't a connector, they are more a means of terminating the end of a stripped core so the individual strands of copper are all bound together neatly to typically clamp into a choc block or a terminal. They come in different sizes and the colour of each size can vary by manufacturer.

The black and red things are called bootlace ferules - they are there just to neaten up the ends of the wires.

RS485 is typically used to control PTZ functions of a camera - is that what you trying to do? What do the labels on the red and black say?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Preciva-CP621200-Crimper-...

(Professional crimp tools can be ££££, but that one is really good. I've got one at home and it will last a long time.)

If they're going in to screw terminals, you'll probably manage without them. If you've got loads to do, buy that kit, but if you're only doing a few, just strip the wire and twist the strands a bit, then clamp them tight in the terminals. Watch out for loose strands that can cause shorts (which is what the ferrules prevent).

Bootlace ferules! Thank you very very much.

It is to control a PTZ camera. The Swann DVR doesn't use a standard connector socket so I need to terminate the wires into something that I can plug in there. And now I know that would be with bootlace ferules. Thanks again.

the ferules are only to neaten the wires - you can tin them with solder or just twist them tightly - they are not a form of connector.

Thank you all again for your help

In the end I just tinned them as buying the connectors left me with 998 of them unused.
