Hi,

Is this possible? the Wake on Lan (WOL) only works on my own network in my house.

I have tried unified remote and configured with a public IP address and so on but it does not work.

Cheers,

VPN Server on a raspberry Pi... Use a VPN client to connect into your network.

I've set one up, it's super easy. Plenty of guides online to do it.

You'll need an end point to connect to within your network, otherwise you're scuppered.
Step by step guide here -> https://www.comparitech.com/blog/vpn-privacy/raspb...
Literally just followed those steps to build mine, and I'm using an android phone to connect to my network.
Also setup a connection profile for my personal laptop, so can use that as well.

I did work at a company where 'my' PC on the office network could be switched on and logged onto via a VPN from my PC at home. My home PC then displayed in a window the desktop of the office PC. I could then work as if sat at the office PC.

I do have Nord VPN.

I am also going to look into the Rasberry Pi guide

Nord VPN will give you a VPN to a different point of presence elsewhere on the internet.
You're looking for a VPN to give you a point of presence in your own network...

What router do you have at home for your internet? Some of them can terminate a vpn connection.

I just use a wifi smartplug.

Turn the power on and off from anywhere in the world

Edit to add.... proper power switch so they are always on .. and no push buttons ( sorry important bit ! )

Would still need a network endpoint to be used if that were the case.

There is a website I've used in the past that sends a WOL packet to an IP address you give it. I punched the WOL port/s through my router mapping and it worked fine . You need a static IP or dynamic DNS.

Why do you want to remotely boot up your desktop/server when you are away from home ?

As shown above - there are lots of ways of doing it but depending on the reason you can eliminate some of these. : No point adding a raspberry pi to terminate a vpn if you could actually achieve your end goal on a PI

I have a spare plug lying around but the desktop requires a button to be pushed to turn on

It's probably just a jumper on the motherboard .. or swap the switch. ( or join two leads together )

Are you sure you can't configure it in Bios to power on when power is restored, or is it one of those oldschool physical on/off push button switches?
I assume it's not a physical switch as such, so at worst you might need to turn off then on via the wifi plug to simulate power failure.
There's a good guide here to WOL if you really want to use that https://www.howtogeek.com/70374/how-to-geek-explai...
