Cheapest way of getting music into network
Discussion
Good morning all.
I’m looking for the cheapest way of getting my music library onto my network. Originals were all ripped from CD I believe the files are MP4 as I stupidly converted into Apple lossless when I used to use iTunes.
I listen through Sonos to 4 Play1’s and via a Connect into my Audiolab amp and use the onboard DAC. I use Spotify to stream music. I currently index my music library through Spotify, with a Sandisk 3.0 USB plugged into my laptop. So it’s on the network but through my laptop WiFi.
This is sometimes slow as my WiFi is a bit pants. And also means I need the laptop on all the time which is a pain.
What are my cheapest options? I want something that sits on the network that I can plug my USB into. Unfortunately my Plusnet router doesn’t let me use the USB on the back as storage as that would have been perfect.
What about a Raspberry Pi? That’s the kind of money I want to spend. Most of the music I listen to is on Spotify. It’s just the more obscure stuff which I like to listen to occasionally. I don’t really want to spend £100 on a single bay NAS. The music is backed up on two other hard drives. It just needs to be simple.

You can buy very inexpensive devices that just share a USB stick on the network: https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-TL-PS310U-Single-...

Google Play Music will let you upload all your music, then it is freely available through any Android or Google device.
You may need to convert from Lossless though.
We use Google music allows 50 000 tracksYou may need to convert from Lossless though.
But
As another poster some months back on another thread its merging with You Tube music whether that will affect the free version I don't know
Back to the OP post
In another thread (I'm struggling to find the thread) . A poster suggested this as a NAS drive (link below)
Now admittedly it requires a drive itself but any 3.5" sata drive would fit it (if you have an old Sky Box/ Virgin box etc one from that would do.
You can though pop a USB drive in at the rear to expand the capacity - be great if it worked without needing an internal drive the USB port is USB 2 so not as fast as USB 3 but its a gigabit port ethernet and could for a modest sum be an answer
The irony is I have around a dozen 500GB Seagate Pipeline/ Western Digital Green drives lying around taken out of various sky/Virgin boxes and they are pretty much valueless as folk want bigger drives nowadays

I have a Denon amp cabled to my router. (it's at least 5 years old and was their cheapest connected amp)
I have the Denon remote app on my phone (but I rarely use it)
My music is either streamed from Spotify, or is on the NAS also plugged into the router.
I also have spotify on my phone.
When I fire up Spotify on the phone and play a track, the Denon appears in the available devices list, even if it is switched off. Selecting it will switch it on and divert the music to it. In fact, it is so good that often I search for a track on Spotify that I already have on the NAS as it is quicker than making the Denon look at the NAS for it.
If I'm playing music 'through' the phone to the amp, the app drives the amp to pick up the feed direct from spotify. Turning the phone off will not interrupt the music. But the volume can be controlled by the phone.

check to see if your router has a usb socket on it and plug drive into that. BT HH5 has one. A DLNA server is easy to setup on a pi if you are OK with Linux.

Theres a mention somewhere that there is a security issue with the port and its been disabled as a result

I am going to try this as I am sure I did once link from Spotify to USB storage. When logged into the router the USB shows, but i can’t see the drive on the network on my PC. https://community.plus.net/t5/My-Router/Probably-a...
