Just a vent.

My old MBP hasn't run very well on Mojave. I get annoying things like bluetooth devices not reconnecting, just small annoying things.

I thought I'd update to Catalina but I couldn't because my hard drive wasn't GUID. Faffed around all of yesterday trying to sort that out:

back up, format, install mountain lion (FFS) from recovery mode. Put files back on. It won't boot.

Install mountain lion again, get in. Download El Capitan, install it. Can't log in to my account.

Try to reinstall it, won't install. Try again, won't install. Mess around with dates, won't install.

Wipe everything and restore my time machine back up. Working. Great.

This morning I try to install Catalina and it won't install because my hard drive is not formatted APFS.

I'm giving up for now.

Which 'recovery' install are you using? Local or internet?

There are multiple startuo key combo options depending on whether you want to:
  1. Reinstall the latest macOS that was installed on your Mac [Command (⌘)-R]
  2. Upgrade to the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac. [Option-⌘-R]
  3. Reinstall the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available. [Shift-Option-⌘-R]

Are you trying to upgrade, or do a clean install?

What age is your MBP?

I wouldn't be in any rush to install Catalina in any case; lots or reports of bugs and it's incompatible with older 32 bit apps. Unless there is some killer feature you require I would leave it for now.

It was mostly because Mojave has been so buggy for me.

As you say, I’ll probably not bother now.

OSX is not what it used to be IMO.

I upgraded my MBP to Catalina the day it became available. I 'acquired' Adobe Creative Suite 2019 via an unnamed source I use it every single day and Catalina has made it crash on opening.

Luckily I forgot didn't upgrade it on my main 5K iMac so it's still running on Mojave for now.
