I’m looking for some advice to ensure I’m getting the most out of a change of broadband supplier. 2 years ago we had FTTP installed by Openreach. With this, they fitted an Openreach Master Socket 5c, with a fibre coming out the side to an Echolife HG8110H-20 ONT. I currently have a BT Home Hub 6 plugged into that.

I’ve changed suppliers to Vodafone who asked me nothing about the current set up and haven’t arranged an engineer on the presumption that I’d connect their Wi-fi hub via a standard DSL connector into the Master socket. I tried connecting through the ONT myself, but this was unsuccessful.

Using the DSL connector I’m seeing intermittent connection with decent enough speeds when connected, but I’m wondering what the purpose was of BT using the ONT if it’s not needed. If I’ll get a stronger or more reliable connection via an ONT, I want that, if not I’d rather someone came and disconnected the fibre from the back of the Master Socket and I can bin off the ONT box.

Hopefully someone can understand where I’m at currently and advise the best way forward before I get back onto Vodafone tomorrow! TIA.

You've switched from FTTP to a DSL based connection of some description - likely quite a step back.

Vodafone don't to my knowledge offer fttp over the openreach service which you have, so the ONT won't be used, it's delivered over your copper phone line.

If you can I'd cancel the Vodafone connection and get a FTTP based connection, perhaps post details of what you've bought from Vodafone to confirm?

Thank you, I’ve contacted Vodafone who said this morning it was a ‘full fibre’ service. Brilliant.
A short while later an Openreach engineer arrived and confirmed they were setting up the FTTC connection. I advised them not to bother as I’d be cancelling!
Another call to Vodafone who then advise their FTTP is only available via cityfibre and ours is an Openreach connection so my only option is FTTC. Installation cancelled and a call back to BT with my tail between my legs.
The plus side is I’ve doubled speeds for £2 a month more.. although I could’ve just done that in the first place.
