Hopefully someone can help as I'm a bit out of my depth here. I'm not a web developer but have been drafted in to help as developer is not available.
I'm tasked to restore a VM that was corrupted. It's simple IIS server hosting internal web app written in ASP.NET

I've spun up new VM, updated it and ensured all the relevant IIS features are turned on.
When I try to run (debug) the project in Visual Studio I get the error below in the virtual browser. I'm developing on the same VM the site is hosted on.
I've Googled around and have tried turning off impersonation on the website on IIS but that doesn't seem to help.
Hopefully someone can assist...

It's been a while and I'm rusty but I think you just need the app running in a "classic" app pool and not integrated. You should be able to configure that somewhere in the IIS MMC.

How old is the website - it sounds like there is a setting the in web.config file that is incompatible with the application pool you are using.

You could try assigning a classic application pool to the website and see it that works.

I believe the original project was compiled in .NET 2.0.

When I spun up new VM I went with .NET 3.0. I've managed to rebuild the project with newer .NET version but now I'm getting permissions error.
I've copied over the project folder from another drive so that must've been why.

When I debug looks like it starts in IIS express so I need to figure how to configure it to turn off impersonation.

Big learning curve here but hopefully I will get there soon.
