Hi,

With Missus expecting and likely to be the size of a hot air balloon by peak summer I'm thinking about buying a portable AC unit.

Does anyone have any recommendations in the 2-300 quid mark?

Igenix seem to be quite loaded up are they worth the money? Also it sounds like it has a mobile app as well.

I’ve just bought the Amcor SF8000E. Cheap and cheerful and suitable for small rooms.

There’s a more expensive one which comes with Wi-fi control but that’s about £400. Lots on the website air on direct.

Deffo get one now. One hot night and they are all gone until the following year...

Doesn’t stop them being a bit rubbish. In a small room they’re noisy, in a large room they have no effect. And the trunking to direct the hot air out of the house... awful.

Save up and if it’s suitable, get a proper system.

Everything you want to know about those units can be found here, with a bit of rambling included :

The tip for "relocating the temp sensor" is very valuable, I did that on mine and it really cools down now.

I have a portable one installed semi-stationary in my bathroom, hot air goes straight out, water too,

but since the design of the intake is not very clever it sucks air from the bathroom, thus creating a little vacuum.

I run a big 5m long 150mm flex tube from bathroom to either living room or bedroom,

so in a heatwave my flat resembles BRAZIL appartments, but for the 3 weeks / year it is OK.

I plan to have a real split-aircon installed , as the heatwaves won´t get less in future.

That link is spot on. And as far as I’m aware, all the portable units have at least some of those shortcomings.

We got a split a/c unit installed in our garden studio last year. Honestly it’s the best £1500 we have ever spent.

I have to agree that portable A/C units have their shortcomings. You can purchase one with higher BTU which cools more efficiently however that would consume more electricity and generally have noisier compressors.

Personally I only need one for a few days of the year and it's not really ideal to install a full sized AC unit in my house so I can live with the downsides.

Good to know a price. Was that price inclusive of installation and VAT?

We have solar panels, so that would reduce the cost to zero during the day at least. What’s the BTU rating on it and the room size?

If I had the spare cash I would install it in our house without question. The units are actually quite efficient at heating too.

We have several fitted A/C units and they're a godsend in summer. If you can, do.
