On a wireless router offering both 2.4 & 5GHz, is it best to sync them together so they use the same SSID and key, or keep them separate?

Keep the SSID's the same and let the device that is connecting decide on which to use.

This - only benefit to separating is if you're encountering interference or want certain devices to work further away from the router. (2.4 works further)

I always separate them, then connect to the 5ghz if it gives good coverage, it will be faster and have less interference.

Test it and see how you get on.

There is a particular issue with Macs, which can suffer from poor connectivity when 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz are combined, so I always separate them.

There is a greater chance of interference on the 5ghz band if you are not in line of sight, yes its faster but it also suffers more from attenuation from bouncing off walls (also has less penetration through walls and the likes).
2.4ghz is slower but it goes further with less chance of attenuation smile
