My 11yr old daughter has asked for a GoPro confused

So I present the PH committee with a few questions biggrin

1/ Are they simple to work?
2/ Can you watch playback on an old ipad?
3/ How do you get playback on a tv?
4/ How do you attach it to a horse-riding hat?
5/ Any recommendations for which one to buy?

I'm sure there will be more Q's but at the mo the above is all I can think of smile

Cheers

1/ yes very easy
2/ possibly. There’s a GoPro app which works okay but it isn’t great. The GoPro records to a microSD card so you need a laptop/pc really (or whatever means of reading fr microSD)
3/. See above. Connecting pc to tv. I don’t think you can directo output from the GoPro to the tv but actually I’ve never tried so might be wrong there
4/ my wife uses the headband mount and it fits round the hat perfectly and gives a decent if slightly sea-sick inspiring view. The latest one has a new image stabilisation thingy and should be a lot better (i think the 7 doesn’t too). Worth mentioning - she probably won’t be allowed to wear it at any ‘decent’ competition for jumping or cross country
5/ they get better with each iteration but they’ve been brilliant since about the 4

The Akaso/ Apeman 4K action cam is good (available on Amazon). Much cheaper to buy and fewer worries if it’s damaged or she gets fed up of it.

Wouldn't bother with a new one, unless she's going to be making expert movies from her horse riding adventure's.
I got a Hero 6 black and it's great, but the battery doesn't last long. I have mine set to 1080p 60fps and it will do a battery in about 45 minutes (roughly)

4k footage and I'm lucky to get home from work before it runs out. 4k also won't play on my laptop, it's way to choppy. Footage plays perfectly on my phone though.

The app works, but it's slow to copy footage across via WiFi. It would probably be quicker to remove the SD Card, fire up the laptop and copy it off, but then you loose the flexibility that you get with the phone app.

Check out this YouTube channel, he does some great videos on GoPro alternative's

Great, thanks for replies. Just had a quick Google re mounting it on riding hat and another (probably better) option is to buy a chest strap.

I need to do a bit of research. Ideally I want it to be able to play on our televisions, ipads etc. I know nothing about this stuff so will probably be better off going somewhere like John Lewis when they reopen. I think the old cameras (10+yrs ago) used to have a lead that attached to the tv - I'm sure the gopro must have similar? Can't see or understand how you'd get it onto her ipad without some decent computer skills though.. scratchchin

Personally, I'd be wary lashing out on a GoPro for a 11 yr old. They are small and (by personal experience) it doesn't take much to lose one of these cameras.
I bought an Apeman 4k for attaching to the bike and it does all I need it to do at a fraction of the price of the Go Pro

Apeman 4k
Ok, couple of mentions of the Apeman then - thanks. Starting from scratch - how easy is it to get playback onto an ipad and (Samsung) television? I'm really after the easiest option rather than cost, so don't mind paying for something I can leave my daughter to use rather than her sticking her finger in my ear every 2 mins to ask me to "get it to work". smile

On the ‘watching it on a tv’ question.

It depends which one you buy, some of them (GoPro 3 to GoPro 7) can plug in via HDMI.

However it might be easier if you have a newish tv to buy a Micro SD Card - USB reader and just plug that Into the TV

Cheers Phunk. I’ll look into the USB reader - never used one before. TV is 2018 QLED so I’d imagine (hope!) it’s got a socket for USB plug! How do I watch the content on an iPad?

Cheers

I tell you now, YOU will be the one "getting it to work" all the time.
You will be the one copying off the clips, connecting to the app, remembering the password, trying to get it to showon the TV etc.
As good as the footage is, the reality is a lot more fiddly and slower working than people like to admit.
This is why you should buy a reasonably price clone.
The other alternative is one of the 360 cams. I think there is one that works with its app way better than the others. And you can realistically edit on your phone.

I was going to buy a GoPro, but I bought a top spec Akaso that matched the top spec GoPro point for point yet it cost just a fraction of the price, a huge sack with gazillions of different mounts cost about fifteen quid. It had about six weeks almost non stop use on our Japan trip last summer and performed brilliantly.

I bought this instead of a go pro. Brilliant bit of kit comes with nearly everything you need and also has a screen so you can see what your doing

My experience too has been that these cost at least three times the price of the alternatives because of the name.
