Right, I'm unfortunately trying to upgrade my mother's phone.

She had an iPhone 4s which I believe is ancient, it's also tiny, and whenever I've attempted to do anything on it - it's been sh*t.

She's 80 and wants nothing fancy but it needs to be bigger but not a huge thing.

Any ideas ?

(It doesn't need to be another iPhone as I'm sure anything modern will be easier to use than hers).

Iphone SE is a good shout if they like the small form factor, still pretty nippy on iOS 13 and it's the same body as the 5. I have an X and it's almost as quick at basic stuff, you can get them refurb for around 100 quid. They are relaunching the SE but I think it's over 400.

Both my parents have an SE, one as main mobile and the other as a back up and they like them.

Does she actually use it for any of the smart features? Nokia 8110 4G can do phone/text and Whatsapp.

iPhone 6s Plus.

They are big so don’t need charging that often and can be set to BIG text. £160 ish from a proper retailer. Would not get her anything else if she has been used to an iPhone, I know I would not get my mum a new phone eco system just for my ease of life lol.

Email/WhatsApp/text/phone/camera - nothing more. At least I've tried to keep her away from doing things like banking in case she really f*cks things up !!

Personally I'd stump up a bit more if you can rather than the 6s if your mum is going to keep it for a long time as the updates for the 6 will end soon and the new se will get 5 years.

For someone elderly, wouldn’t the bigger the better? Larger screen, on screen keyboard, easier to read/type on etc?

Well yes, and no.

If it's too big it'll all be too much of a change and the whole world will be rubbish.

I've just updated her 15 year old Sky TV stuff and the controllers 'don't work like the old ones' rolleyes

So a bit of an improvement in size will be more manageable for my patience/mental health.

My mum upgraded from a 4, year before last as she was finding reading the 4 quite tricky. She loves the size of the PLUS. Not sure size is that big a thing for women wink they just slip them into their handbag.
The new SE is a good shout.

Apple does a handy comparison but only back as far as the SE1
https://www.apple.com/uk/iphone/compare/?device1=i...

To get an idea of size and all that. 4s a tad shorter than the SE1?

iPhone 7/8/SE2 all bigger than a 4, but not vast.

You can always increase the text size on the iPhone if the text size was a problem, you don't need to get a bigger phone to combat that.
