SKy Q and WiFi.
Discussion
Just had it all revamped at mother's place.
SkyQ in main room, another box in the kitchen and a new WiFi box which is currently in the main room also.
My mother has a computer which is upstairs so I wondered why the WiFi box was downstairs ? Probably just because there was a telephone socket.
My mothers PC seems to struggle with getting a WiFi connection so was going to move the WiFi box upstairs to see if I would get a better reception.
When the Sky engineer was here I asked about the WiFi box and he confirmed it was only WiFi nothing to do with the TV.
Now I was just about to remove it when I've found that the WiFi box is plugged into the back of the SkyQ box ?
So why is this ? Anybody know ?

The sky broadband hub, main TV boxes and mini boxes all form a mesh wifi network. Its generally pretty good but if you have a wifi device (like a PC) in a dead spot that when things get tricky.
Your best bet if its just one PC is get a set of powerline adaptors, one for the router and one for the PC. That will give the PC a wired connection to the router, bomb proof reliability generally. That's what I do with my office PC as the office is a converted garage with solid insulated walls that just love blocking out wifi.
You can get 3rd party wifi repeaters, some that even use powerline but they just don't play well with sky's mesh network. If you really really need a wifi repeater get a white sky extender box. Sky might even give you one free if you can prove that area of the house is a dead spot.

The router will have been plugged into the Sky box because they're next to one another, and a wired connection is always going to be preferable. You can put the router where you want as long as there's a phone socket, and as already mentioned, the devices create their own Mesh network.
The latest Sky kit seems pretty good and there have been various changes to the main boxes - including an external power supply to stop overheating. Since we had ours replaced I don't think I've had to restart it once.
Wi-fi range isn't a problem in most houses so perhaps the PC is due an upgrade.

It could just be that my mother's PC is crap (do WiFi PC cards break down over time?).
I can get reasonable WiFi (enough to stream Amazon stuff on my laptop), when my mother can't even get a webpage up ?.
They don't wear down.... no moving parts...I can get reasonable WiFi (enough to stream Amazon stuff on my laptop), when my mother can't even get a webpage up ?.
But it probably is a very poor WiFi antenna on her PC so a PCI wifi card would be a good starting point.
You can also change the Sky router out to a higher spec one that will provide a better Signal. But thats a little bit more in depth as it's not a rip and replace.
