Folks,

I hope this finds you well.

I wonder if you could assist. I sold an iPad via eBay. The buyer said it wasn't delivered and PayPal refunded the purchase price. I've lost £600!

Before I sold the iPad I removed it from my account. Cleaned the product down and shipped it. I only have the serial number as the buyer asked for it to check the specs and to see if it was registered lost or stolen. Didn't know that was even possible.

Can I track it now? I'm not the best tbh honest with technology and I'm not a Apple aware!

Any advice will be helpful.

Thanks.

Hope you used delivery with tracking...

No idea regarding tracking the device, I've had iPhones stolen in the past and by the next morning they're fully disappeared from the system and Apple said there was nothing they could do.

As joshleb says, use the tracking info to see if it was delivered.

If it wasn't, then claim against the courier - but be prepared for a minimal payout if you didn't pay extra for increased insurance, as you'll find in their T&Cs somewhere that their liability is limited to the price you paid for the service (or some other nominal amount).

If you didn't use a tracked method, or didn't insure it, then you have my sympathy, but have earned a valuable & expensive life lesson.

If the buyer checked if it was lost or stolen you must be able to log it as lost or stolen? Don't know how that would help you though.

How do you actually know if the device was delivered or not?

If you did a full reset before sending the ipad you would have had to enter your icloud password to remove it from Find My, which means you won't be able to track the actual device.

I really hope that you sent it with tracking and adequate insurance to cover the value of the iPad. It's a quite common scam to initiate a chargeback for non-delivery; when the buyer initiated this claim did you check whether it had been actually delivered during the time Paypal normally give you to respond?

Report it stolen via the serial number.

I sent it by royal mail and it was insured. The parcel needed to be signed for. The signature says 'delivered' and is not signed by the buyer.

Yep, wiped it clean before sending it over to the buyer.

I tried finding out how to track it but it seems I'm more clueless than I thought. Really frustrating.

Denial of receipt claim
If it was sent RM signed for your stuffed - max compensation £50
If you sent it Royal mail Special Delivery you are probably covered to full amount if you selected right amount of cover

Ring RM on 0345 774 0740
Listen to options carefully have your rference number to hand explain clearly that the guy says he hasnt got it though it says he has and that you think its ademial of service claim you need to start. Agent wiull take your details buyers details if it was "pinged" (when postie uses his PDA thing) too far away from buyers address then it gets easier

The buyer might be trying it on because he didn't sign for it - as I believe posties are not asking for signatures (due to social distancing).

Our's just rings the bell, waits to see us in the porch, moves away and ticks his PDA once we've picked it up from the step.

One of the Hermes drivers even asked if he could take a photo in lieu of a signature.

Your receipt has a long tracking number on it. Pop that in the Royal Mail website

Hi,

Just to repeat a previous poster, could you confirm the postage method as 'Signed For' or 'Special Delivery'. This will affect any compensation you may be entitled to. Also 'signed for' doesn't always show any movement of the parcel just a final 'delivered' or otherwise.

Having read similar posts I would advise that you contact a person at eBay via phone call or chat and explain what the 'buyer' is doing. The refund process is almost automatic in favour of the buyer so you need to speak to someone to properly put your side across.

Good Luck!

I can see another issue here that i hope I am wrong about
It is absolutely essential that on e bay you enter a tracking reference when you send an item out. I do this on both E bays site and paypals
If the OP (seller) didnt do this when he posted it then he is wll stuffed as E bay made it a p[art of their rules to do this *(see below)

The Original poster needs to ascertain which service he used, Special delivery, tracked or Signed for then use Royal mails tracking system here to get the details

https://www.royalmail.com/business/track-your-item... - note what it says

Then ring 0345 774 0740
The sequence to get through is this:

Automated message - we are very busy etc.... fewer of us etc..... you cannot overide or skip this message so wait patiently for 20 -30 seconds or however long it is
Then hit this sequence of buttons
1 = Residentia
4= Problem with service
1= Lost damaged, delayed
1= Royal Mail tracked signed for special delivery etc

Then an announcement and your in the queue explain that you sent an item with tracking reference *************** and buyer says it wasnt delivered. So you think its a denial of receipt query

  • The reason i mention you HAVE to enter a tracking reference is this. I bought something off someone some 19 or so days ago.
I got a message it had been dispatched but there was no tracking reference - that in itself often happens
I didnt receive it so i used the E bay Question thing to ask them when and how it had been posted. I wanted the item,
This now effectively opens up a case against the seller and in my example It required the seller to respond within so many days. ed That was fair enough I just wanted the item I appreciate they may have had difficulties getting out

I was astonsihed when less than an hour later the case was closed down and I was refunded. The message was that ebays customer services had refunded . I have just come off chat with someone at e bay about another matter and i asked the chat person about this refund. They said it was refunded as there was no tracking details entered by the seller and if a buyer opens a case of non receipt and its after I think 10 days the system just automatically kicks in and refunds.

Royal mail signed for max insurance = £50
Royal mail special delivery insurance = minumum £500

Special delivery would have cost around £9 vs signed for of around £4.

No way you should send something worth £600 via signed for. The buyer probably has it now and you've no way to prove otherwise. You can't track it as you've removed it from your icloud account.

I believe that they can be used if shipped to some countries
Couple of years back, son in law left his iphone on a bench @ the largest shopping arcade on Algarve in Portugal
30 secs later - gone
A security guard was close by coincidentally but hadn’t seen a thing. Cctv not available when asked him, what a shock .
It was briefly visible on ‘find my phone’
Some shifty behaviour, it disappeared (scumbag had removed sim card)
Disappeared from the face of the planet strangely..
Luckily insurance paid out
