I have a couple of Chromebooks arriving anon for the kids. Primarily for schoolwork, though they may well double up as decent travel devices for watching movies on etc.

Googling (smile) it seems that the only way to lock down accounts (e.g. disable certain apps, set time limits etc) is to use Family Linked user accounts.

But that then means hassle when they access their school accounts I believe?

I'm assuming if I let them use their school accounts to log onto the device with, they get seamless access to their school accounts, but I can't then control what apps they can use/see?

Has anybody dealt with this on personal Chromebooks?

The school should have their own policies and restrictions set for their students accounts. I'm assuming from your post that the school is using G Suite for Education?
Best thing to do is contact the school and ask them.
(Also ensure Guest mode is disabled on the device. First basic step, but vital!)

If G-Suite is GMail, Google Classroom, Docs etc then yes smile

Disabling guest was going to be my first move - thanks.

Will have a look with one of their accounts (they're young so not using GMail to any degree and we've been getting them logged on via our std machines), have a look at the key things I want to be on my toes with and will then contact shool.

Thanks again.

Our kids have Chromebooks and there is a school account with controls determined by the school. They then have 'normal' accounts which are family linked. And guest account disabled.

All works well.

I think that's where I was going to go with it, so good to know it works.

Will have a play before handing them over to the kids...and then can recover our normal laptops to avoid damage and issues with those smile

No worries. If all is done correctly then installation of apps, add-ons, and extensions should be blocked by the school admin on the student accounts. If they're that young GMail will also likely be disabled, or at least just restricted within their class/year group/school etc

They arrived today.

Took 10mins to get running. Not yet handed them over to die kinder until I've had a better play, but when logging on as my eldest I saw a YouTube icon, so tried it. Blocked by the school's admins smile

Next test is to install something like Kodi and see if he can see/run it....check a few other odds and ends and then set up a "home" account for him that I can family link and timebox for more personal use. (I think that'll work well as I think I can block them using those accounts, or at least the apps within
them, during school hours, beyond bedtime etc).

Devices are nice. Lenovo C330 Gen2's. Feel nice enough to use and convertible machines which should help my youngest and also mean they can replace their slowing iPads. What they see also looks exactly like the ones they use at school (obvs) so they're very familiar.

Thanks again for the input.
