Just upgraded to 8MB/s with Ukonline, however a little dissapointed to keep getting a speed test rating on my laptop of only around 2MB/s. Phoned support who went through various options but no changes. Then had bright idea of trying a test on my old desktop pc which sits on the floor as a file server, did a remote desktop thing and ran speed test on that and bugger me if it wasn't getting a lovely 6MB plus. Both computers are connected over 802.11G to modem/router thing.

Something in the laptop settings is obviously causing a bottleneck, don't think it is the wireless connection itself as laptop sits about 10cm from the router, connection shows connected at 54MP and can certainly buzz files between the 2 at a healthy old rate. Don't really know what to look at other than this so any idea would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Sinclair

Might depend on the throughput of the wireless adapter. For example if you laptop has a USB adapter, this will make network I/O very CPU intensive and this may limit the maximum throughput you can achieve. Do you have any way of measuring the actual transfer rate you can achieve between the two puters? This might enable you to rule out wireless bandwidth issues.

Sorted it - found a programme called DrTCP which I now remember using about 6 months ago - I had messed around back then with a few settings to try to fix something else and one of the settings was way lower than the default, didn't make much difference when I was only on 0.5 Meg but it was now. Anyway happy man again but thanks for the advice.
