Evening

Grateful for tablet recommendations for an elderly not very tech savvy parent.

Mum has an old Ipad2 - probably 7 or 8 years old now - and it's increasingly "sticky" / slow.

Time for a replacement I think but the cost of new ipads is frightening. Everything she is doing is Google anyway - gmail / google internet.

Anyone had good user experience with a good Android tablet? As is the paradox with senior citizen usage it really needs to be fast and responsive or they lose attention - even if just using the basic functionality

Supplementary question - anyone know if any of these tablets allow you to take control remotely?

Thanks in advance

If she’s had 7 years with an iPad, I’d go with an iPad. I’m really struggling getting used to the kids android tablets and I’m not 40 yet laugh

Dead easy this one, mostly because I've done the same myself for the old dear.

Latest iPad, lets be honest, we all hate change, even us high performing execs who read books about embracing change and get up at 4:30am to embrace the day.

I'll action this when I get done with my 0430 Wim Hoff breathing exercises

You're no fun on the thrift spectrum

But probably right

Thanks!

Definitely stick with an iPad.

My wife 69 just loses patience with anything else. Which means I get the hassle.

Also, the last time I compared prices for a similar sized - density display and processor for myself, the iPad price was in the same ballpark.

...and if you're wanting the latest, greatest model at a bit of a discount, don't forget to check Apple's Refurb Store as well.

Ah that's great thanks - can't think of a good reason not to go that way for them - cheers for that.

You won’t need a pro. Any 9.7 2018 or the newer 10.2 2019 iPad will be fine.

Another vote for the latest iPad. It's the only tech my 79 year old dad can operate. As a result he now also has an iPhone and is actually capable of using it other than for making phone calls to my landline. For 5 years he was the only reason we had a telephone connected to our landline.

I hear you. In fact I swapped my dad from an iPhone 4 to a Nokia 8 - perfectly simple android - but he just doesn't use as much no question

Another iPad vote. The latest standard iPad is pretty good value.

Amazon tablets are cheap and nasty tat by comparison and android on tablets is pretty much dead from other manufacturers.

Anyone glanced at the Ipad Air as an option? Lighter is attractive for 90 year old arms but it's only about 20g lighter....

Yes and it does make a bit of a difference. It’s basically the previous gen 10.5 iPad Pro rebadged. As well as a bit lighter it has a better screen, without the gap between glass and digitiser. My mother picked one up from the Apple refurb store, good as new with the same warranty just a bit cheaper.

Agreed on the on the Amazon tablets, but Samsung/Huawei are alive and kicking?

OP,If they managed to go 7 years with an iPad, go for another iPad.

My parents had a hand me down Android tablet and now android it all they know, they can't handle iOS. For us "young people" it's easy enough with a bit of frustration but for the elderly just stick with what they know. It's only a couple hundreds more, isn't it?

Mum has the latest “iPad” and that is more than capable compared to her old ipad2. Mrs has just got the latest air and I almost think it’s too light. I took delivery of the 12.9” pro and it’s a heavy beast but very quick. I will have to use a controller (Which I have a steelseries nimbus) as trying to game holding it is not great.

Does an iPad work with any bluetooth controller, like my Xbox One S? I never tried tbh, but I've been using it with the kids android tablet and my computer and it works a treat.

Certainly does.
