Currently I have plusnet wifi. Cable comes into the house and straight into the router which is in a coat cupboard. I've just changed from BT...didnt have any major problems before, but now signal is very weak when upstairs or outside (but still near the house). I also seem to be losing quite a bit of speed even when not too far away.

I am guessing the router is not as good so what is the easiest (and cheapest) way to boost the signal and not have it drop off around the house.

House is typical 3 bed semi size. The coat cupboard is all brick walls.

Although I have done a bit of reading it isn't something I know much about, so simpleton answers much appreciated...I've read the Improved internet/wifi comments and couldn't understand half of what was said

Cheers

Putting the router in the cupboard will cause the signal to be reduced, can you move it outside the cupboard as a test ?

One alternative is to replace the router with a better one - something from Asus perhaps, good value and quite fast. The best option is to add a dedicated Wifi access point but that's more complicated.

I am with Plusnet and the router caused no end of problems. Eventually changed it to a BT hub 6, cost about a tenner on EBay and all was much better. I may consider a mesh system later so I get a better signal in the garden, but not too bad at the moment anyway..

thanks for the replies. i would prefer to try something other than a different router. we still had problems (albeit much less of an issue) with the previous BT router so i would probably end up having to spend quite a bit on the router anyway.

unless someone is able to recommend a good router under £80?

is it right that you need a wired connection for an extender? would be a pain running a cable out of the cupboard. im thinking of trying a repeater for £30/£40 then if that doesnt help then getting something like google nest or the amazon version.

A powerline kit would work.

Yes.
They create a second Wi-Fi access point from where the Wi-Fi plug is put. It will be a different SSID and password to your router, just connect your phone at to that when you need. The phone will remember it just like your normal Wi-Fi.

If you use powerline to “Cross breakers”, be careful!
Maybe things have changed....but years ago we tried them to get a network point upstairs, and we found it lost 90% speed because it crossed to a different circuit breaker on the circuit board: tried another socket downstairs and it worked great!
We have a couple of tplink extenders (from Costco, about £45 each) which mostly work fine. Occasionally we have troubles (couple of times since lockdown: I suspect Virgin media as much as anything).

I have that in our thick stone walled farmhouse. Works perfectly. Think you need to be on a single circuit as mentioned.

That's good to know. I should be fine as both will be downstairs. I'll probably put the extender part just outside of the cupboard and use that all the time...depending on how good the signal is it can be moved around downstairs I guess

Apologies for hijacking the thread. This is something I am looking into at the moment, but being a complete technophobe I am struggling. I need it to work in the garage , which has a separate consumer unit / rcd board than rest of the house
Does anyone know if I can use a plug socket in the hallway about 7ft away , behind a door, from where I want to use it
Hope that made sense
Thanks.
