I set up pi-hole yesterday mostly playing around and not for any specific reason. But, they used to block the adverts on youtube on fire sticks/TVs which would be useful to me. Not because I am trying to deprive a business of a legitimate source of revenue but more because some of the ADs are not appropriate to my kids.

Is there a new way of blocking adverts on youtube on a fire TV?

I noticed in the last few days, a lot more if the in video ads are blocked than previously. Instead I get a black screen for a few seconds then back to the video. In the few months I've been using a pi hole it's been a bit hit and miss about how many it blocked in YouTube. For a while it blocked a lot of the first ads at the start of stuff then they came back again.

It's really hard to block the Youtube adverts with the PI hole as the PI hole can only block a specific server address. This causes issues with Youtube as they keep the adverts on the same server.

I blame Linus. He did a video about pi-hole last year and it seems since then YouTube have changed the way they serve ADs. Now they appear to come from the same server pi-hole can’t filter.

Fortunately, I bought the raspberry pi as a frivolous purchase and now I’m looking for a use. I noticed it can run XBMC but I already have a Lenovo server dedicated to streaming media that I rarely use.

Pi-hole has improved the experience on kids iOS games which used to constantly force them to watch ADs though. They have all gone. And, the internet is a cleaner experience for the entire family. So not a complete waste of effort.

I don't see any YT ads using NoScript, Ublock Origin & Privacy Badger on Firefox. I'm sure Pi hole is good, but it isn't a cureall.

Yes, I see no YouTube ads on my Pc and haven't done for years. That’s because I run device level blockers due to PistonHeads handling of ads in the US making the site unusable without them on many occasions. I have posted in website feedback several times on the topic because I’m very sure a large percentage of US based PHers have had to do the same over the years and once you turn an ad blocker on you are unlikely to turn it off.

Those device level ad blockers will not help my Fire TVs though so that’s what I’m playing with.

You can't do it with pi-hole.

You can however install an app called Smart YouTube TV on the Fire Sticks, which does block ads.
