I’ve got a laptop with a 32gb hard drive, that has run out of space as I only have 1gb left.

Tried to do a clean install but there isn’t enough hard drive space.

I’ve plugged in an external hard drive but get the same result.

Anyone have any ideas?

the windows 10 installer will give an option to delete partitions and create new ones. Use that but be sure you have any data off the drive as its blitzs everything

Is the hard drive removable? If so I recently bought a Kingston 240GB SSD for £27 that is amazing, my 7 year old laptop boots up in around 10 seconds.

It’s a Lenovo, and I’ve looked at that option and unfortunately memory can’t be added to.

Yes. put a new SSD in it. 32Gb is too small to be of any use.

Hang around for a while & someone will be along to tell you to put Linux Mint on instead.

Are you confusing memory (RAM) with a hard drive?

Which model Lenovo is it?

32gb is a very small HDD.

Do this and put up a screenshot:

Open Start.
Type in system information.
Click System Information.
Click System Summary.

I'm surprised it even installed at all. I didn't install on a 64gb SSD recently for fear that after a few updates it would be too full to use.

I suppose you could reduce the paging file size , recycle bin and turn off sys restore ?

You really need a 100gb+ to allow basic pc use in my opinion.

I saw a few of these some years ago and the likes of PC World were allowing them to be returned.. A drive of that small size isn't really fit for purpose

No, it is 32gb. Took it to a couple of local specialists and they said it couldn’t be upgraded without loads of hassle.

It’s an Ideapad S130-11 .

Tried that one, and it doesn’t work with my hard drive, an external HDD rather than a pen drive .

It is because of the 32 GB eMMC drive it uses. Are you desperate for windows 10? Linux Mint full install would use half that drive - or a lightweight OS like Lubuntu would use even less.

Pretty sure the UK version of this laptop has a M2 slot so can fit a NVME SSD quite easily, it's worth popping the back off to have a look as 32GB storage isn't usable imo for windows 10.

Not a chrome book and agree with you, but to be fair it was ok for 18 months, decent little laptop.

Will give the factory reset a try later tonight and report back.

I have an Asus t100 which is another 32gb job. Lord knows how manufacturers thought it was an acceptable idea.

Anyway that machine can use a micro sd card in the slot as the necessary extra memory for this task. Anything through USB wouldn't work on it. Worth a try.
