Kinda stumped by this

Have an iphone 11 & a roku box with apple tv plus subscription and a 2018 LG oled tele.

In the olden days - my now defunct apple tv 2 could both stream stuff and allow airplay (either off the phone/laptop or ipad)

Now i have a library of stuff (ie personal pics & videos) on the phone that i would like to view on the TV.

Is it the case that a new piece of hardware is needed?

Would be super-frustrating if it is (& explain why apple revenues are so stratospheric!)

Are there any workarounds to this?

At the moment any videos that i want to access big screen are needing to be uploaded to youtube & played on the app on the TV
- which seems a super inefficient crossing of the Apple/google divide

Can anyone help?

Seems a bit of a stitch up!

Think the only way is an Apple TV box.

Sadly.

I already had Amazon Prime & a Firestick, so duplicate everything to Amazon Photos (which is free and unlimited for photos) and use that, because I don't want to buy an Apple TV box as well (not enough HDMI ports, either!).

I've not found a way to display photos from my phone - however, airplay from my MacBook works seamlessly, so I can do a slide show from that onto the TV.

I've just been playing around with mine & found that I can share with my phone smile

Mines a new one, not sure if it's the same on a 2018, but on my iPhone I went to the quick menu thing - swipe up from the bottom & there's a screen mirroring option there. I pressed that & the TV came up on the list - then share & go into photos smile

..you must be lucky enough to have one of these Airplay compatible TVs, it won't work for the rest of us frown

I’ve just left the Apple TV2 connected to a spare HDMI port & select that source/ input when wanted - dead easy

You're right - I just went to check our other LG OLED and despite it being just over a year old, it seems there's no option on that one frown
