My Samsung external drive conked out last week so I ordered a new Seagate Backup Plus Slim 1TB to replace it, only to find that its software has an ageist attitude towards my 2013 iMac running IOS 10.10.5. On closer examination of the specs (that I somehow missed when ordering it) I see it won't work on anything earlier than 10.11.
Can anybody recommend something that will work on 10.10 and that will automatically back up my iMac like the Samsung did? If backing up manually using Time Machine is the price to be paid for a functioning drive I'm happy to go down that route. Needs to be USB not Thunderbolt. Thanks in advance for any assistance/advice.

Just plug the drive in and point time machine at it, should be all you need.

I did that, but other than recognising the drive's existence there were no actions on offer. Specs say it's not compatible with IOS 10.10.

How come you are still running 10.10?

I've got a mid-2011 iMac, running 10.12 (Sierra), and I've had no problems with new USB external drives for either Time Machine or normal storage.

Use the disk utility to erase the drive format Mac OS extended and then the time machine preference should have select backup disk as the main option.

After having a lot of expensive software rendered inoperative by a previous Mac update I don't automatically accept every update these days.

I'm beginning to think that upgrading the Mac will be easier than trying to find a 10.10 compatible hard drive.

Just tried to upgrade from Yosemite to Mojave but am getting a timeout error on the recovery server, whatever that is.

Just a quick update to say thanks to Mattley for his advice on the hard drive, that seems to be working.
Not so much luck on upgrading the iMac from Yosemite to Sierra though, Mac Support's own download is 'broken'!
