Moving House - Broadband
Discussion
Excuse my ignorance if this is a very stupid question, but I'm moving house next week and I'm looking for the best way of getting my Broadband up and running in the new place as quickly as possible.
I am currently with BT and have their Home Hub. If there is an equivalent line in the new house, can I notify them over the phone and then plug in and go or is it going to be an engineer out job?
I'm only asking as under the current climate, speaking top anyone from BT seems to be a case of staying on hold for much longer than usual (which is more than long enough as it is!) and I'm concerned that waiting times for an engineer may be vastly extended, which again seemed to be long enough as it was out here anyway. I'm also caught on the hop slightly as due to estate agent shutdowns etc it went from not being able to progress with the move for ages, to everything being done and dusted in record time, so I'm going to be moving at least a month before I expected to.
When I moved to where I am currently I had to wait for an engineer as it was fibre first came to the area and I had to wait about a week for it to come to the cabinet at the end of the road anyway, so obviously there was no fibre at the house until then.

Have you read this page?

Do you know if the line at the new place is active & what the numebr is? You stand much more chance if it's currently working.

Well that was pretty painless if it all works. Actually got almost straight through, no real time spent on hold.
Did a check on the new house, say it should just be plug and play with no need for an engineer, will just need reactivating. Earliest that can be done is 2 days after moving date, but they will send out a mini hub in the post running off 4G, so can still operate everything in the meantime, free of charge and can be kept and used in case broadband ever goes down in the future.
All sounds good if it works, but had a bit of a nightmare getting up and running with them last time, hopefully won't have the same this time around if its all live already, just needing reactivation. Fingers crossed!

I moved to a new build 3 weeks ago that had bt fibre installed at build stage. I was with Virgin at my old place.
Signed up to fibre 150 online, they sent the router to my new house and switched it live the day I asked. Only pain was leaving a note on a building site to ask the posty to leave round the back.
So far really pleased with BT had virgin since 2004 and thought nothing would be as good.

I actually have both BT and Virgin broadband, in two separate locations.
They're both very good broadband services so long as they work.
When you have problems though, they can both be less than stellar when it comes to resolving them. In the case of Virgin, its really hard to get through to someone (unless you are looking to purchase a new service from them of course). For BT you usually get an Indian call centre which sometimes is decent but often is a bit of a nightmare especially for more esoteric issues.
Both of course will require you to jump through all manner of hoops when it's a tech issue, BT moreso than Virgin.
A mate of mine spent 2 months trying to get a BT install arranged. He had taken up a really good deal from one of their new customer offers and they initially screwed up the install process (said hub was in post etc, it never showed). Then they claimed to have lost all his order details and said they'd make a new order for him ... which when he got his hub and got his first bill didn't have any of the nice sweeteners that were in the initial offer. Took him many, many hours on the phone to get the original deal he was promised. Personally I would have told them to stuff it at that point.
